We are planning a trip to the Caribbean this fall and would like to know if anyone might have input on where a safe place would be to leave our boat on the hard from June to Nov. We hope to get as far as the Virgin Islands.

Thanks for any input

I would recommend Independent Boatyard & Marina on St Thomas (Benner Bay)

Contact Bruce at 340-513-0671 to see if they have room for you.

The only hurricane approved yards are Puerto Del Rey on Puerto Rico near Fajardo and Virgin Gorda Marine on Virgin Gorda BVI. There are other yards on St Croix, St. Thomas and Tortola that can store your boat during the season but you might not be covered by your insurance if a hurricane strikes. The major thing to look for in a boatyard for storage during hurricane season is secure tiedowns embedded in concrete. Keel holes if you have a monohull so that your boat is not on jackstands and therefore cannot blow over. And if they do not have keel holes then the one piece steel cradle system that had a main beam down under your keel with welded arms that hold up your boat. Jackstands have proven to be worthless in a storm as they wash up due to rain and the boat falls over onto its side breaking the mast and hull sides. Also the yard ground should be 5 meters or more above sea level to eliminate the problem of storm surge washing out the jack stands or floating the boats.
