Ah, that's so dependent upon the application. Having just finished up many projects on our rebuild, we used numerous variety. There's a local supplier here in San Diego--
Sunshine Supply with a wonderful sales person who really knows his stuff--Matt. I just give the a call, spec the application (above, below waterline, application temperature, UV tolerance, paintable or not, elastic modulus, color, clear...) and find out what they recommend. They can order anything and carry a wide variety in-house, so "it depends" is the response from me.
For example, for the type of thing you're talking about, we've used a lot of
Tremco Dymonic FC for caprails and to re-install glass in our butterfly hatches, too. UV resistant, paintable, fast cure, and inexpensive compared to marine products.
Getting away from high-tech, for solid wood-on-wood bedding (not gluing nor waterproofing) we also use a marine product called
Dolphinite
And, in a few places where I'm really concerned about rot (wood-on-wood), I've used a mixture of white lead paste with Dolphinite or white lead paste, beeswax, and
Stockholm Tar mixed into a home-made bedding. The thru-hulls on our (wood) transom for the gen-set and engine exhaust were bedded with this mix. The only place I know of to get the white lead paste is George Kirby Paint (508-997-9008). Best pricing on beeswax is on Ebay. We got a 5 gallon container of Stockholm Tar from a friend with a tall ship so don't know where the best prices are for that
. The only folks who might use this remedy are folks with wooden hulls (not plywood).
