Copper-Coat Finally Done.

Hauled out about a month ago in Eau Gallie Boat Yard in Melbourn, FL...Stripped the bottom back to gel coat (a lot of old paint on there) and did her up with interprotect and then copper-coat. (was lucky enough to be right near Indian Harbor where the distributer, Jim Everett, is. He was nice enough to come over several times and make sure we were doing everything right) While hauling out and grinding back we found a hairline crack on the corner of the hollow sump which we ground out and patched, I then added about a foot of cavaseal to the sump to get rid of the hollow area.

I've attached pics of the old hydracote (after 1 year in the water) and the new copper coat. You might note she was sitting a bit below the water line as I've got her really loaded out at this point... As such we went ahead and raised the water line about 4 inches which gives her a little fudge factor. The pictures don't show it but she now has a 1inch black boot stripe trimming the waterline and is starting to turn that copper green.

I'm extremely pleased with both the boat yard, and the end result.

Yea! Glad you have CopperCoat now. We found that the first 6 months the "bright" and brown color of CopperCoat was less effective at antifouling than that which turned green more quickly. Once it is ALL green, it is much more effective, IMHO. There is one red sponge looking thing that really doesn't care that CopperCoat is on the hull, it will attach itself anyway. Thus, while in So. Cal, we still cleaned the CopperCoat every 6 weeks or so. We also had this spider-web looking stuff (whispy) that we called the "Tumble weeds" that showed up one time that we waited 3 months to clean the hull and we were mostly not sailing. It was easy to wipe away, but very odd looking stuff.

We hauled out (after 14 months) to do our annual maintenance, raise the waterline, and add a bootstripe. Our bootstripe is black Pettit Vivid, btw, which won't turn green but rather stay black and still has antifouling properties.

So far the copper is looking good... I've only been back in the water a week and half (in FL/GA warm salty waters)but it's already turning green and there isn't so much as a hint of scum.

Here in Europe, Copper-coat has received mixed reactions. Some swear by it and others swear over it. The buzz in the press is that success depends upon a very precise application in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions.

I must admit, I love the look of a freshly applied Coper-coat but that is not the test of a good anti-fouling. It will be very interesting to learn how your Copper-coat works out. Naturally, I hope you will be entirely satisfied with it. I am sure you will keep us posted.

I will... mine was definitely applied to spec, the distributor was right there and stayed involved with the process... we'll see what happens...
