Here is an excellent treatise on the subject of of Corrosion as it effects metal boats and metal components of non-metal boats - from aluminium spars to stainless rigging to electronics. The marine environment has not only salt water but salt laden air which when dissimilar metals are in contact a process of Corrosion is enabled and hastened.

Here is the link to PDF document describing the subject :- CORROSION

We have also included this in our Cruiser WIKI - YACHT CORROSION

Below is a "galvanic series" chart which shows the various alloys and their position in the series. Alloys to the left will cause alloys to the right to corrode, while the alloys to the left will be protected...

An excellent chart to assist towards a better understanding of corrosion on yachts on the Cruising Wiki - HERE.

I hope to be updating the cruising wiki page on the issues of galvanic and salt water corrosion and corrosion prevention, with some new photos taken above and below decks, in the coming weeks. So watch that space.

Great info on the Wiki, guys.

Since our boat has been back in the water for 2 weeks now, we did our first measurements to ascertain if the zincs are adequately doing their jobs. Seems so. Yesterday, using a silver/silver chloride half cell and a multimeter we measured 825 mV. Measurement was between the half cell suspended in the water and the steering gear at the top of the bronze rudder shaft. I understand (according to the mfr of our half cell) that 500 mV minimum is needed to protect uncoated bronze and no more than about 1200 mV as that is about the point that metals again start experiencing problems. We'd like to see something under 600 mV as wooden hulls like ours can experience damage to the wood with over zinc-ing. We'll keep checking over the next days and weeks to see if things change. To bring the voltage down a bit, we suspect we'll be putting a mild steel anode on the rudder gudgeon rather than the small zinc one that is there now.

Fair winds.
