Default Polyurethane Hull Paint

Honey Bee is up for a repaint. She was last painted with a polyurethane about 10 years ago. It is still sound, but showing its age.

We are planning to repaint with a polyurethane sometime in the next few weeks. The question is: Which one?

So what is your favourite paint?

Stay away from Altex paints. Spent a fortune buying the paint and was faulty from the get go. Ended up with International and have painted three other boats with it. Fabulous to apply with a brush and tip method. Always available for advice

I agree with Rob and Annette. I have always had a good outcome with International. I have used both the two pack and single pack. The two pack lasts longer, but the single pack with the teflon additive brushes on beautifully.

Never had a problem with Altex paints on steel. Make sure your surface prep is good but that goes for any paint. I have 2 pack Altex polyurethane over 2 pack Altex epoxy primer and it has lasted for several years without showing any sign of age.

I was a fan of Altex because it is Australian and Qld company. Did a near perfect job of preperation on my yacht. Painted the boat and wet it looked like a new coin. When it dried it looked like I had painted her with a rake. They blamed the weather, the prep, and just about anything they could think of. Ended up costing me over ten grand. Since then I have used International Paints and when there has been a problem they sent a rep, sorted the issue which was mine, but still offered me the paint for free to rectify. Doesnt get better than that.

Cheers

So,
how different is it using the 2 part International (Perfection) versus the 0ne part (Toplac) in terms of difficulty doing the actual job and the lasting quality?

I got a quote to paint - and know that we will need to be doing the job ourselves based on the quote.

Boat is dynel sheathed timber - current paint well worn.

I don't know a lot about dynel, but I imagine it must stretch to accommodate the movement of the timber substrate. Two pack urethane is not elastic and is not as good in that department as single pack when coating timber. I may be wrong, but it could be worth checking.
Cheers.

So, we did finally make a choice, or had one made for us. Honey Bee had her topsides sprayed by Able Marine in Kettering. They use Wattyl Colourthane, so that is what went on. Amazing gloss finish, with an amazing bill to go with it. Now almost too terrified to move the boat for fear of smudging the finish!
