Dear Friends

Now we are anchoring at Airlie Beach (whitsunday), enjoying sailing surrounding islands .

I got 1000w gel battery with two (50 amp) charger but one charger is out of order.

I'm thinking to buy big battery charger/inverter instead just replace another 50amp charger.

and keep the working 50amp charger as back up.

So many charger/inverter in the market, I get comfusing--- I never use combine unit.

Could you hepl me what size amp and what brand ??

My generator produce 6kva 240v

Cheers

David & Sue Pyo

Hi David,

Info needed :-

#1. How many House batteries ? Give their rated output in Amp Hours ? Type ?

#2. How many dedicated Engine start batteries ? Give their rated output in Amp Hours ? Type ?

#2. Besides the 240volt -6kva generator, what other DC charging source do you use ?

eg: Solar panels, wind generator, engine alternator/s ? (is the 50amp charger mentioned an engine driven alternator, OR a charger powered by your generator?)

#3. Why do you want an inverter ? From what DC voltage to what AC voltage and wattage?

Dear Friend (MMNETSEA)

Here is the informatiom you ask.

Hope you can find me a good charger/inverter.

#1. How many House batteries ? Give their rated output in Amp Hours ? Type ?

4x 225A@ 20Ah/Gel

#2. How many dedicated Engine start batteries ? Give their rated output in Amp Hours ? Type ?

2 batteries ( 100 amp /gel -- port and staboard)

#2. Besides the 240volt -6kva generator, what other DC charging source do you use ?

eg: Solar panels, wind generator, engine alternator/s ? (is the 50amp charger mentioned an engine driven alternator, OR a charger powered by your generator?)

4x 130W solar panels/ one wind generator(15kt-15amp)/4 alternator ( two in each side,80amp)/12v 60A charger(Sentry)

#3. Why do you want an inverter ? From what DC voltage to what AC voltage and wattage?

I use inverter power for TV/HD, microwave oven, two laptop, music, and little power tool.

At the moment I use mastervolt inverter 110 volt, I like to change to 240volt one for australian standard.

Best Regards

David, thanks for the info;

As you rightly pointed out 'There are so many charger/invertors on the market'

Many are very badly designed and made from China; often containing material not suitable for the marine environment.

Could I suggest you talk to Latronics - an Australian Company who make top quality Australian 12vdc >>>240vac inverters. They are based in Caloundra - Queensland, if you phone them on

1300 550 204, they will give the name and address of the nearest distributor to where you are now in the Whitsundays. Their website click LATRONICS

Check the equipment that you want to run off the inverter for the watts they need to operate,

example : the microwave oven you mention probably consumes the most.

All the best

Richard

Dear Richard

House batteries almost 1000Amp for 60amp charger is not big enough, I think

If i buy charger and inverter combine unit,It might catch one stone with two bird !!

i don't see Latronic make charge/inverter combine unit ? Chargeing capacity should more than 100 amp too !!

Regards

David,

Speak to Latronics get the name and address of the nearest distributor - then see what they have in addition to inverters.

The list of power and electronic equipment that you provided, demonstrates a need to manage the DC/AC systems as a whole, not individually.

The charging of batteries using your solar panels, wind generator, the generator and the alternators on each engine REQUIRES careful regulation and balancing with the proper equipment.

If, I was in your shoes I would get a qualified experienced marine electrics/electronics technician on to your Catamaran.

This would be most adviseable for what you are wanting to do. You don't want to buy the WRONG thing.

Battery power generation / storage is a huge issue with yachts with more and more toys being added to play with onboard.

I hate it when people run generators in a quiet anchorage disregarding others trying to enjoy the peace and quiet, namely first thing in the morning and evenings and night times. Sorry about the rant but it's a real issue with me!

Getting back to power generation; a large battery capacity is beneficial with the ability to push power back in quickly is the key.

On my old Westsail I ran 5 deepcycle batteries (can't remember the size now) but put power back in with a 100 amp marine alternator regulated by an external TWC regulator and found this set up cured all my previous power problems.

My current boat needs such a setup but TWC are out of business, can anyone suggest a good smart, easy to install external regulator to hook up with my 80 amp yanmar alternator?

I don't mean to hijack this topic just hoping to broaden it a little.

Best wishes,

Alan
