Hi All

Another task while the boat is out of the water is to finally make new genoa sheets. Anyone have a formula for the length so I dont waste my roll of rope?

I kind of would like to avoid making them too damned long as I have a penchant to do.

Cheers

Knowing the distance of winch to tack of sail (A<>

and the length of the Genoa's foot (B<>C)

the minimum C<>A length would be ?

PLUS length to make turns round the winch.

PLUS length to take the sheet around the staysail (if cutter rigged) and the mast when changing tack to opposite side.

Hypothetical numbers A<>B = 33ft (10m); B<>C = 20ft (6.1m)

C<>A = minimum 40 ft

Plus:- 4ft + 10ft

Total 54ft (16.5meters) Minimum

Eh gads, reminds of high school mathematics, But it does make sense. I am the guy that always has eight mile of extra sheet and for once I want to have a nice tidy cockpit like the ocd sailors I know. Thanks MM.

Cheers

A tip :- Once you have established the final length for one Genoa sheet (DON'T CUT); Double the length, then fold the double length into two equal lengths and bend it onto the clew using a simple clove hitch:-

Oh, that's the clever way about it.

The whole idea of having a single length of sheet rather than 2 separate Genoa sheets is IF (highly unlikely) the length is too long, then only one length will need shortening, as opposed to having to shorten 2 Genoa sheets.

Idea:

Leave the line on the roll. Run it backward through your winch, car, etc to the genoa. Then use it. When the genoa is sheeted all the way out and you have just the amount of tail off the winch that you want, mark the line.

Then use MMNETSEA's idea and double it.

Then, finally, cut the line.

Don't forget to add the amount you need when you have the jib poled all the way out, just in case you are tradewind sailing. We also add enough that every 1000 miles or so we can cut off two feet. That moves the wear point of the car and the turning block to a new place before the sheet is weakened too badly. We also end for end the sheets between cutting off, for the same reason and get a whole trip around the world out of a set.

Fair winds...
