Default Caribbean Expedition

I'm currently part of a 2 man team looking to kayak from North America to South America in January 2017. We know about the trade wins running from the North East but could someone tell me about the strength of the currents running from South to North and if there are any crossings between islands that are particularly known for difficult currents etc. Any advice greatly appreciated

It sounds like you've got quite an adventure planned. We're on the West Coast so cannot help with personal experiences. The only people I'm aware of who have done a trip such as yours actually took the time to hug the gulf coast because they came out of the Mississippi River and down to South America. Different routing.

Depending on your port of entry into the USA (assuming that you are starting from the USA), I would suggest the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway (AICW) to Florida with significant attention to tidal flows between inlets from the Atlantic as the currents in the AICW can be significant in both directions depending on your location and the tidal phase.

Having a rather large yellow streak down my back, I would plan to hug the coastline during my entire trip, despite the increased distance, for the safety and support that one could expect there. Best of Luck on your adventure! George
