I am new to the board, a monohull sailor who has decided to go the Multihull way and circumnavigate with a Multihull with my wife and my son. I have read a lot about multihulls and seen some, given the budget I would like some help from the members in deciding which would be the wisest choice. I am looking at St. Francis 44, Catana 44, Nautitech 435, Voyage 43, FP Belize, Privilege 42, Manta 42 and I also saw a Privilege 465 wich has been listed for a while with DB. I would like to know which do you feel balances best cruising payload vs. speed. Does anyone have an opinion about the Privilege 465??

Hello

With your budget in mind and the LOA between 42 and 47 ft - the choice of suitable catamarans to cruise and circumnavigate is huge. Need a little more preference information to narrow down manufacturer and model :

#1. Owner's version : 2 heads (1 en-suite for master cabin) the other in opposite hull ??

#2. Galley up/down ??

#3. Max Beam (travel lift spec) ??

#4. Beachable (Reinforced mini keels) Bottom of rudders higher that bottom of keel ??

#4a. RIB, tender size and O/B hp.

#5. Engines make and HP - Turbo or Natural ??

#6. Access to engines - inside or external ??

#6a. Shaft or sail drives ??

#7. Dagger boards (to improve performance windward) ??

#8. Payload vs total displacement ??

#9. Bridge clearance - height of mast ??

#10. Bridge deck clearance ??

#11. Tankage - Fuel and water ??

#12. Watermaker ??

#13. Hardtop Bimini ?? - Solar panels ??

#14. Cockpit Helm View ??

#15. Davits??

Winches/Windlass/Anchors/

Windows - UV and sun protected ??

ETC.

Richard, thank you for your input on this question. I agree that there are several aspects that have to be taken into consideration, and I will add on all you listed. One of the main considerations that have been raised on various forums has been build and design, which boat would handle best under these conditions, which includes cruising gear, and not in race trim. I have no experience sailing Cats (except for Hobbie Cats) but I have been sailing most of my life from Laser to 45 foot sloops. The main reason to go to Multihull is space, so Owners Version is a must, I want confort and not worried about entertaining tons of people.

A must, or at least a separate shower and berths that can be easily converted in storage. Even Owners versions could make better use of Owners Hull by adding closets instead of office!

#2. Galley up/down ??

I really do not have an established opinion. I have always been down on a galley on monohulls, I can understand the fact that galley up makes it more entertaining and galley down would make it safer underway, and you can leave stuff out of the salloon to be cleaned at later time. One thing I do like are some Cats that the Salloon roof goes all the way to the end of the hulls, so you can actually see the galley down from above, not all Cats are like that, most that are are SA.

#3. Max Beam (travel lift spec) ?? From what I understand 21 feet is the limit between on size lift to the other, but on 42 feet length I am already beyong 21 feet beam, correct?

#4. Beachable (Reinforced mini keels) Bottom of rudders higher that bottom of keel ?? Beachable is a good option for certain DIY repairs.

#4a. RIB, tender size and O/B hp. Tender small but 15 hp outboard

#5. Engines make and HP - Turbo or Natural ??Natutall aspirated is always better in my opinion, size changes with boat size I would say 30-40 for 42ft.

#6. Access to engines - inside or external ?? No opinion as soon as it is good access, by good I mean that I should be able to reach all engine sides, and easy access to water impelers, both salt and refrigerant.

#6a. Shaft or sail drives ?? Sail drives are easier, no alignment issues.

#7. Dagger boards (to improve performance windward) ?? I love to sail fast, I understand the merits of Dagger Boards, however I can make without on long cruises.

#8. Payload vs total displacement ?? Thats where I need the most help, there are three of us, with gear, I understand that light build Cats will "sink" their hulls into the water drastically changing performance, and heavier ones will have their performance less affected, but are slow to begin with. That is exactly where I need help to find out which design has the ability to reduce such performance loss.

#9. Bridge clearance - height of mast ?? Not going to ICW

#10. Bridge deck clearance ?? Is it really an issue, I understand and read everything about the topic, but my question is, haven't the builders though about it too went designing the boat? So even the lowest bridge deck boat should be able to sustain sailing the waters it was designed for. I thought the Bridge deck clearance of the Voyager 43 to be low, however most owners seem comfortable with their daily use.

#11. Tankage - Fuel and water ?? As much as possible

#12. Watermaker ?? YES, but not a design issue, can put in any boat.

#13. Hardtop Bimini ?? - Solar panels ??YES, but not a design issue, can put in any boat.

#14. Cockpit Helm View ?? Bulkhead or two helm positions on the stern, did not like the bridge deck idea and also did not like the front steering (even though it was designed by the Guru of Multihulls)

#15. Davits??YES, but not a design issue, can put in any boat.

Winches/Windlass/Anchors/ Do not see it as an issue because all boats have them, anchors are easy purchase.

Windows - UV and sun protected ?? arent them all?

ETC.

Hi,

I am off to Malaysia tomorrow and depending where I get to over the next few days - will try and resolve a few of our concerns - especially #8 . It is this one that I find builders/brokers seldom providing consistent figures for displacement Eg : Tonnes, Tons, lbs, kgs (for Nett Displacement ? for Gross?) how many times have you read MAXIMUM PAYLOAD ???? Designed Payload ??

Do the specs for displacement include the weight of fuel and water - what about people ?

Did one of the listed Catamarans have a specified payload included in the gross displacement?

A good friend of mine has a Prout 50 Executive which it is the only Catamaran I have seen that clearly spells out the payload specification, which if you exceed by 10% the heel of the transom submerges.

Admiral 38' Executive version. Very impressive and seaworthy in comparison to its competitors. A South African company builds these boats. With a 7' bed in the owners bunk and the aft hull as a spacious bathroom you'll find yourself impressed...it's huge! She's got a beam of 23' which is larger than most and positively noticeable. For a 38' the living space is as comfortable as some 42' because it was in the sugar scoops that the length is shorter... beneficial when you have to pay/ft.

Admiral's really prove their worth. Circumnavigation with your family is a journey you want to experience with as much pleasure as possible...that's why it's called "pleasure cruising"! Buying the right boat is key.

Hey

i am a technical catamaran expert and devoted the last 15 years to build the best possible 470 ( according to me of course) bluewater cruiser.

This based on the plans of Erik Lerouge. The last versions are named and commercialised under Barramundi, and one of the versions can certainly be sold around the figure you mentioned

Luxerious and spacy ( lenght 14.60 with 7.80 meter)

Technically equipped with systems that last and do not give trouble.

Light ( around 6 ton) fast, epoxy -corecell sandwichbuilding under infusion, extremely stiff.

If you have questions on technical issues, i ll be happy to respond

G'day there. Whilst looking at many 'sites' for all of you to learn from to answer many of your questions about how to buy the 'right' yacht the first time around I typed in to 'google' search Leopard 42 & came up with lots & lots of very good & helpful information. Hope you go into that 'site' as I feel you will get lots out of doing that. The whole 'site' is full of info & most without bias & that's a change. Good luck & good sailing. My new motto is "Every reality begins with a dream" Ciao from - down-under, james aka jj aka Silver Raven
