Now, this is the european way dealing with the situation. Bring food, and keep order.

"""

The Evertsen is part of a European Union mission primarily charged with the protection of vessels carrying food aid destined for Somalia. The mission's secondary objectives include the protection of vulnerable ships in general and the prevention of piracy in the waters surrounding Somalia.

"""

(I can't restrict myself from mentioning preavious comments stating how few US Navy did to protect their vessels.)

Suspected Somalia pirates freed by Dutch navy.

I read this and got very upset. Why we the world cannot get together to deal with this serious problem? Instead, we are encouraging the pirates.

Am I missing something?

No - you are just observing global political wuss. Those poor pirates must be "depraved on account that they are deprived."

I am upset also. I am really against use of disproportionate force, or punish people only because their bad living conditions, or the deeds of their neighbours, but hey these actual guys have been actual pirates. I think there should be a rule that there is an appointed jury (flag state of the capturing vessel, or whatever) which should rule in these cases.

This sends a very bad message: you can be a pirate and get away with it.

As a side note everyone would have been happier if these pirate guys would sit some time in a Dutch jail. For them it surely would be a sudden rise of living standards, and maybe some journalist would be interested enough to raise some interest to the situation.

If I think about it, maybe putting them back to their vessel was the worst case scenario for them. Every other solution would save them from endangering their life.

If only it were true. From what I have read the economy in the pirate havens is booming. In fact, part of the reason that they are not only tolerated but welcomed is that, to quote Obama, they "spread it around." Fancy cars, imported food and drink, all sorts of high end stuff. They have even created a stock market where one can buy shares in the various ventures and profit from the booty, This is not a bunch of poor fisherman struggling for a living. This is an organized criminal enterprise. And, like drugs, since it is essentially very low risk and very high payoff the problem will continue until the risk is made high and the payoff low. That is just human nature.
