Maputo — A gang of Somali pirates has seized a fishing ship belonging to the Mozambican company Pescamar.

The Ministry of Fisheries announced the disappearance of the vessel, the "Vega 5" on Friday. Its statement said no communications had been received from the ship since last Monday.

The "Vega 5" had been fishing off the Bazaruto archipelago, in Inhambane province in the south of the country, with 24 crew members on board.

Vega-5 is a Mozambican vessel in legal terms but in reality she is owned by Pescanova here in Vigo with Pescamar being their Mozambican subsituary company. The ship master and fishing master are, I believe, from here.

This is not the first time people from this area of Spain have been taken as hostages by the pirates but, for some reason, there is much less publicity this time.

I wonder if this boat was actually fishing near Bazarutu Island - Bazaruto is some 1,500nm south of the Somali villages from where the majority of the pirates come from.

Having the pirates come all the way down past Kenya and Tanzania to reach Bazarutu in Southern Mozambique, passing most of Madagascar seems a long way to capture a fishing boat and take hostages ???

Strange indeed! And in cyclone season for the Mozambique Channel.

The story needs confirmation for sure.

In any event if the story has substance how ironic it would be if the pirates are using one of their captured fishing vessels as a mother ship (They still have a couple of Thai trawlers).

Highly unlikely that they came down in their boarding skiffs with a couple of powerful outboard engines.

Shocking response by South African Defence Force/Navy.

Not involved "for political reasons".
