Third time unlucky for bulker
SHIPPING authorities in Bangladesh confirmed to Fairplay today that the bulker Jahan Moni has been captured by pirates in the Arabian Sea off the coast of India.
Shipping minister Shajahan Khan expressed fear that the pirates are taking it to Somalia. The Bangladeshi-owned and flagged 44,377dwt bulker had been heading towards the Suez Canal yesterday when the pirates struck.
Heavily armed pirates attacked twice before capturing the ship about 1738 Bangladesh time, said the shipping department’s director, General Rear Admiral Bazlur Rahman. The bulker – owned by Brave Royal Shipping – had 25 crew members aboard, all Bangladeshi.
No casualties were reported, authorities said. Jahan Moni was carrying cargo from Singapore to Europe. It was taken just 275 n-miles west of Cochin, accroding to tne Bangladesh Department of Shipping, which if confirmed would be the farthest from Somalia that pirates originating from there have struck.
