Boat: 38ft ketch

Hi I'm looking for crew to sail with me initially from Adelaide to Perth and if all works out, if they wish, all the way to Madagasar. I'm 32, English and have just finished a two year research project in Oz. I originally sailed here in 2006 and spent a fantastic 7 months cruising the Carribean and Pacific. On this trip, I hope to visit the Cocos Keeling islands, poss the Seychelles, Reunion, Mauritius and Madagascar.

The boat (Grain de Sable) is a 38 ft ketch with 6 berths and she is equipped for ocean sailing (EPIRB, 6 man liferaft, lifejackets, harnesses, SSB, VHF, GPS and backups, etc.)

I plan to leave Kangaroo Island (Adelaide) around the 15-18th of Jan and then Perth, sometime around the beginning of Feb. At present there are no other crew on board, so I can take 1 or 2 crew with me. No qualifications are necessary, but some experience would be useful. All costs involved in joining the vessel, repatriation and visas etc., will be payable by the crew. I also expect you to pay your share of the food and if you wish to drink, in port, then you'll be responsible for that too. As for chores, I'd expect you to help out at the helm, if needed, take watches, help with cooking and cleaning and generally help out around the boat. Don't worry, we'll workout a roster that suits everybody.

If you're interested please reply to this post, or feel free to write me an email at ant312[AT]gmail.com

Cheers
Anthony

So any takers? Guess the thought of the bight scares a few off, I dont know, but I do know that the sailing down there is fantastic, wild at times, have first hand experience smile.gif , (though i should add nows the best time of the year to go) and unbelievably picturesque! With the high pressure systems moving those horrible lows and cold fronts away south and creating some easterly winds closer to the coast we should get some spectacular anchorages and hopefully a beautiful sail across! So if any one is interested then they should get in contact asap, as I ll be leaving in the not too distant future!

Cheers

Ant

Hi Antony,

Just found your post. I had intended to be back at the boat by now but health issues are formost in my mind, plus the bight weather is still not well settled yet,it should be sometime in Feb where we should see large highs sitting in the bight semi stationary, or is that too much wishful thinking?

Cheers, Alan

Hi Alan

Sorry took a while to get back to you. Actually crossed the bight about 2 weeks ago and the winds were ok. The highs were in place then and the weather not too bad. I dont know if you've left yet, but most people I spoke to (locals) seemed to think that the best time was Jan/Feb so dont leave it too long cos the easterly set lewin current starts to get stronger as the year progresses. I'd also hug the shoreline on the way over, we stayed about 50 miles off, this is to avoid the current somewhat and the lows and associated fronts that pass through every few days. Have also been told that if you leave the passage up to Perth too long ie end Feb / April the E winds are reenforced by the land breeze and get very strong.

Fair winds Anthony

P.S If you have trouble you can tuck into Eucla apparently has a reef surrounding it giving you a secure anchorage from the SW swell. Was a tip from another sailor he said all the fishermen and occasional yachtsmen use it if they need shelter. I didn't go there on my way across, but he said that there was easily enough clearance for a yacht. Would check the charts anyway, but just thought I'd let you know.

Hello Anthony,

I would be interested in crewing on your boat but am not available until after March 30th.

I am a very capable and easy going. I can get along with a wide variety of folks and have lots of worldly experience. I am equally comfortable cranking up for fun or spending quiet time enjoying the sites. Since I have spent a lot of time on extended boat vacations I fully understand the close quarters and value the right personalities.

While my sailing experience is not extensive, I have taken ASA sailing courses, 101 through 104. I am also an instrument rated private pilot, a avid white water kayaker, advanced scuba diver, and mountain biker so honing my sailing skills should come pretty quick.

I enjoy hard work, am a great cook, and can fix anything.

Let me know if you still need crew for the rest of your trip. I can meet you anywhere.

Ray
