Yacht's medical kit.
This subject has been discussed here before but the topic is worth reopening to get fresh input. 1) What books do you have on board covering the subject? (Book Search) 2) List the essential items that should be carried in your medical kit on board. A cruising yacht is often on passage and far away from any assistance so it is important to have some knowledge and good reference matarial to treat a variety of possible injuries or ailments - and have the necessary medicines and first aid dressings, etc., close to hand. You cannot carry everything but what do YOU have in your medical kit? I came across this essential and helpful download: Ships Captain's Medical Guide (download & print) or, the book is available HERE Commercial kit. . |

Good topic to return to !
It would also be useful to get data on the type and frequency of :- a) documented injuries incurred at sea With that information the type of items to be included in a yacht's medical kit could match recorded need. So, if members know of any specific work on the subject - please let us know . |

I have a copy of the "Ship Captain's Medical Guide". Mine is a hardback edition but it is downloadable free of charge at
http://www.mcga.gov.uk/c4mca/mcga-seafarer...dical_guide.htm Although designed for merchant ship use, it is a good book as it covers ailments and injuries suffered in all waters from the tropics to the arctic regions. Aye, Stephen yacht NAUSIKAA |

My experience in obtaining certain drugs and antibiotics for the boat's medical kit:
I supplied our doctor with a certified copy of the ship's and captain's papers and a signed declaration that included that the medications would remain on the yacht and if removed they would be returned to the supplier (without refund) intact. The same documentation was given to the pharmacy. On the strength of this, we were able to obtain scripts for just about everything we required. Copies of these scripts were kept with the medical kit and if anything was used we kept a very strict record in the kit. This enabled us to carry things like Morphine, various antibiotics, etc., etc. It is extremely important to retain all documentation and a register in case these drugs are queried by customs. What has been your experience? |

In my search for a basic list of medical supplies to add to the Wiki's "Medical Kit" page I came across an EXCELLENT webpage on the subject HERE by Doctor Mark Anderson.
This page is well worth printing and keeping aboard. |
