I'm looking for one-time, some-time or full-time crew, depending on your schedule and how much fun we have sailing together. Prefer a long-term mate, female, 30's to early 40's, slender, fit and under 5'5" (1.65m).

I bought this solid, roomy 42' ketch a year ago and brought her to a boat yard on the St. Johns River, about 30 miles west of St. Augustine, Florida. Here I've done a substantial refit, replacing/upgrading gear from rigging to thru-hulls, and installing a long list of new equipment from radar to water maker. It has been a challenging project, and fun much of the time. The result is one beautiful, eminently seaworthy cruising sailboat! I'm on the home stretch now. You're welcome to join me and help out, if you like. Guaranteed you'd learn a lot! Or you can just visit, see the boat and talk about upcoming cruises.

We'll be casting off this coming spring, shaking down the new equipment and systems with a summer-long cruise up the U.S. East Coast to New England, maybe Nova Scotia. In the fall I'd like to head down to the West Indies via Bermuda, to the Windward Islands from Martinique to Grenada. Might just hang out there for a while to write, hike, dive, eat fish, drink rum and dance the merengue barefoot beneath swaying palm trees. You know, the usual. After that, we'll see. Maybe Central America, maybe through the canal into the Pacific. I'm open to short- or long-term or permanent crew between and beyond now and then.

I'm an experienced offshore skipper with nearly 150,000 nautical miles logged under sail. My articles have appeared in major boating magazines worldwide since the 1980's, and my book, "Ready for Sea!" (Sheridan House), is a popular manual for outfitting and preparing a sailboat for extended passagemaking and living aboard. Point is, I know what I'm doing on a boat, which ought to be a prime consideration for anyone setting sail with a skipper they don't know all that well. I'm a pretty good teacher, too, when I've got a crew interested in learning.

As for what I'm looking for in a crew member, a helpful attitude around the boat is always appreciated. Neatness and cleanliness, for sure. A willingness to stand watches on passages and handle lines when we dock. If you want to hoist and reef sails, navigate and pilot the boat and set anchors, well, I'll sure let you. And I'll teach you whatever you're willing to learn. I'm not into making up a lot of rules. Just do what you can to help out, smile, be happy and have fun. And please don't smoke tobacco.

Now, I know this isn't a singles site, but there is some of that going on here. So for the record, I'm open but not insistent. If it matters, my specs are: 5'7", 165 lbs, solid and well built, 50's but (really do) look 40's, secure, chronically adventurous, somewhat counter-culture and privately spiritual. My photos at www.silverheels.us/captain.htm are recent. If you love the free life and world travel, then come see for yourself.

Tor,

Welcome to the Cruiser Log.

No, you are right, this is not a site for singles to hook up on but, as one astute sailor once said, "If you find a good crew, marry her". Anyway, good luck in your search for a crew / partner.

F.y.i. I removed your other posting as it was identical to this one but for the photos.

Very nice website by the way!

Aye // Stephen

My name is Mark.I saw your ad for crew. I'm not the mate you are looking for, but would love to join you for a bit if you need the help.

I am an experienced sailor, although just getting back into it this past year. I have chartered offshore 4 times this year and am looking for short trip crew positions to get me back onto the water and build sea miles. I could connect just about anywhere along the route. I can make a one month commitment, longer if there is cell and internet access from time to time. I am very capable, I can fix stuff, I know electronics and power systems very well, especially solar and wind, really anything electric. I have always been a Jack-of-all-trades kind of guy. I can improvise solutions in a pinch , and I can cook. I own my own Victory 21 which I have restored and raced and sailed off San Diego. I am 49, self employed, easy going, love adventure, a certified diver, and physically fit. . I don't smoke or drink too much.

Tell me more, and lets see if we can put something together. I am pretty flexible as to my availability.

Hi Cap'n Tor

my name is Tracey and, in some respects, match the demographics you seek. I am 40 years old, 5 ft tall, and fit.

I have been sailing since I was a kid down here in the Land of Oz - dinghies = sabots, moths, sharpies, cats.

Also crewed for lots of people in my younger days aboard anything from quarter tonners to 60 foot cruising yachts.

Cruised the Queensland coast from Brisbane to the Whitsundays aboard Roberts 57 and an Alberg 34 (yes, Alberg 34 - The Alice Colleen was the plug for the mould and only about 15 of this design were ever built. Damn shame as she is sooooooo beautiful!!!!!)

Have done two Brisbane to Gladstone races, the last in 1998 as navigator aboard a Roberts 44.

More recently, I owned a 20ft trailer sailer from 1999 - 2000 and a Cal 34 Mk III until her sale about a month back.

I do have a couple of variations to your ideal. I am down here in Brisbane, Australia and I do have two daughters, aged 7 and 4, who incidentally, have grown up aboard our Cal and, like their mother, are up for adventure and home schooling.

If you haven't been deterred by what you've read, you can email me at nanisasismama@aapt.net.au.

Cheers
Trace
