Hello everyone!

I am at a crossroads in my life and am excited for the next adventure.
My plan is to purchase a sailboat with the proceeds from the sale of my business and live/cruise/relax/explore for 6 months of the year- every year! (if anyone has any reccomendations for what I should buy- im all ears - im looking to spend around $200kusd and like the idea of a multi hull)

I have limited sailing experience but am certified in advanced navigation standard and off shore cruising standard by CYA.
Because of my limited on water experience I am looking for an experienced person to be the "captain" of the boat and teach me along the way! Hopefully the candidate will be easy to get a long with and will be able to stay with the boat long term. (I will need someone to sail/maintain her when Im not there for 6 months of the year!)

The crew will only be expected to contribute an equal share of the cost of food and drinks. All boat costs (fuel, fees, marinas, etc.,) will be covered by me!.
Each person is to cover their own travel expenses to/from the boat and their costs of personal visas, etc.

looking forward to hearing from you
ps- purchase date is 6-10 months

When you get going let me know. I may not be qualified to skipper but i can watch over a boat with the best of em! I am working my way through my certifications. I will be relocating down to warm water soon. I am referenced, well loved, hard working, can cook, and every once in a while will make you laugh.

hey there canadapassion,

WOW what a grand idea. I only wish, actually I dream of it all the time.
Where are you located? I am in the Okanagan Valley of BC, My sailboat, Capri25 is on Lake Okanagan.

Yes the multi hull boat. Well sir, you are on the right track I think. Having spent time sailing from Nassau to the Turks/Caicos, windward, I have now an opinion on the good/bad of multi vs fixed keel. It really depends on what you would like to do and where. There are places that the multi hull can get to where as the 4-7ft fixed keel cannot. The other side of that coin is that the fixed keel boat will point to the wind much better. What do you prefer is most important. Multi hulls seem to be more user friendly to me. Make sure you have roller furling, no matter what type of boat you buy.
Lots of anchor chain rode and many metres of good scope.
I spent three days waiting out bad weather and we were about 60-70 metres from the anchor in big swell and it all worked out great.
I just spent 6 weeks on a 12m Trimaran which is way different than a Catamaran.
I had the chance to get on a couple of Cat's that were between 40-60feet. Nice layout and space to hide if needed. The mono hull does not offer the space unless you go bigger than 40ft.
Ultimatly it is your boat so do lots of research, be careful not to purchase a "Great Deal" from the Gulf of Mexico that has been through and probably sunk during the recent hurricanes that the area is now so well know for. Get a good GPS and learn how to use it. There are sooo many extras, you will have to decide.

I am interested in joining you at some point. I am not a licensed captain but do have some CYA and ISF certifications. Lots of blue water experience and sail every week on my Capri 25 or for fun on my Laser 1.
Good luckwith your plans.
adios
Charles

Canadapassion, I wouldn't spend the entire amount on the boat, there are lots of boats you can get for lot less money, I also wouldn't recommend a multihull for a first boat. There are lots of problems that one can have with a multihull that don't arise with a monohull. Speed on the ocean has little to do with the enjoyment one can have with life on a boat. Speed is only really important if you are in a race and if you look at the records of mono vs multi they aren't that much faster.

Finding a captain that you and he are compatible is often a difficult proposition. When one is the owner and control the money and the other is "the smart" one, there are bound to be decisions made by each that other doesn't agree with and tensions mount. I would suggest start with a small inexpensive boat and work your way up the ladder, rather than jump in at the top with a major investment and sink or swim. Your investment just might sink.

I have a boat for sale but probably not what your looking for, and also am happy to teach people about sailing, When I start my trip, a circumnavigation, I will have room for a passenger, all that's keeping me from leaving is the sale of my 2nd boat. That brings up another idea, hiring yourself on to another boat and learn the ropes that way would be an excellent low risk way to accomplish what you want in the end. To learn to sail and see the world.

If you want to do the carib and get into the shallows - a Catamaran is the way to go - They may not point into the wind as well as a mono, but on a 40' Cat the living accommodations can be quite spacious - Of course marinas tend to charge a little extra for the beaminess of a cat on dock, bu they are pretty nice - Personally I really like the Roberts and Caine Leopard 45 - This is also known as the Moorings 4500.

You can get one less than 1o years old for around 250K if you broker the deal right.

Check out www.usedboats.com and do a search and see what appeals to you - Also if you need crew in October, I am currently looking with my wife - She is a great cook and we are both ASA Bareboat Certified (We have the little piece of paper that allows us to charter boats ;)

Cheers and Congratulations on your Decision!

Hi,
I am looking to crew in 2009. I am in the process of getting my captains license. Yet have just day sail experience. Im a great cook, mechanically inclined,EMT, and my job of the past 21 yrs have been operating cranes up in NYC. SOooo I can handle stressful situations.

Im 51 yr. old female . (use to bicycle race). Physically fit. I am looking to escape the rat race and embark on a slower life style, crew and eventually purchase my own vessel.

Hello...sounds like quite an adventure you're getting into. I spent 3 months with a misplaced Canadian(now a kiwi in New Zealand) in 2003 in the Caribbean starting in Trinidad, hitting most of the islands up to St Johns in the American Virgins, and then returning the boat to Trinidad. It was quite a trip. Trinidad is a great place to look for a blue water boat, by the way. A lot of people store boats there through the hurricane season. The Rio Dolce in Guatemala is good for boat storage also and getting better.

Cat's are really good in the shallow Caribbean....esp behind the reef in Belize and up the Rio Dolce in Guatemale(max 6 foot crosses the bar at the entrance), but any sailboat with a shoal keel will do quite nicely I think. I personally go for monohulls, but I am a bit prejudiced. It's usually better to spend your money on room(a bigger boat) than a newer boat, I think. But make doubly sure the engines are good, and a good water maker and diesel generator really help out. If you need anything major done to the boat, check out getting it to Trinidad. There are very good support sailboat industries and it is quite cheaper to get things done in Trinidad than in the US or Canada.

I'm a mid 50's male near Chicago, USA looking for a 3-6 month trip starting early Jan, 2009. I usually stay home during the summer, sail on Lake Michigan, and the year end holidays but am available most years from early Jan thru June. I'm interested in going anywhere I haven't been before, anything that seems fun, or anything that gets me out of the snow...lol... I have 25 years sailing experience that includes owning a 34 ft cruising sloop on Lake Michigan..... I have done several multi-month trips in Caribbean, PNG, and the Philippines... and have experience in blue water passages to 2 weeks in the Pacific, Atlantic, and Great Lakes. I've been in winds to Force 8. I'm a passable cook(haven't killed anyone yet), know navigation, engines and gin and tonics..... For more info on me go to http://www.KalikTime.com/Sailing_resume.asp or email dbowen0849@yahoo.com. I'm definitely interested in helping you and hope the timetable and destinations work out. I like to do my adventuring during the winters on other people's boat.....lol

My name in Robert Gregory I am 21 years old living in Chattanooga, TN I have a very laid back personality, absolutely love sailing, and am looking to get away for a while. I've been sailing and racing one design boats my whole life, and have even won a few regattas; very competent sailor. Have no blue water miles but am dying for the chance, have been on a few large boats like J22, J24, J120, aerodyne 38. I regularly race Lasers, Snipes, and Thistles on the weekends and have a lot of experience in each class. If you are interested in have me crew for you please contact me at laser165082@yahoo.com.

I respectfully suggest you are going about this backwards. I suggest that you crew on other people's boats for a while. That way when you pony up the money to purchase your own boat you will have a better idea of what you want, and you will not have buyers remorse quite as badly when you see other cool boats.

KISS unless you enjoy spending most of your time working on your boat in foreign places, which will happen anyway.
Xsvdrifter

P.S. I just sold my boat 2 weeks ago and I'm very unhappy about my decision. Willing to work for free 7AM-12AM in harbor and unlimited on the way if the boat "MOVES" (no more than 3-4 weeks in one place fixing things) doh_icon.gif .
