Default Oil Rigs in Gulf of Mexico

Hi. Anyone currently sailing or with knowledge of any problems with unlit oil rigs, disused (but shallow) well heads etc on a route from Cayman to Galveston Bay?

I've heard that after Katrina, there's still quite a lot of debris around. I cant find any Notices to Mariners on the subject! Comments anyone?

Thanks, Tony

Hi Tony. Click on 'search' at the top right hand side of this page and enter 'Houston - Bahamas sail'. There is some discussion there regarding your topic. Otherwise I am sure some of our forum contributors will be along to advise you shortly.

Best wishes.

David.

Since both major hurricanes in 2005 gave Galveston a pretty good miss, there is little to be concerned with between Cayman and Boliver Roads. If you were heading further east I wouldn't say that. There aren't THAT many rigs along the Texas coast, compared to along the Louisiana coast and few were damaged.

We sailed from Vermillion Bay La to Freeport in June last year with no problems at all.
