Lovise crewed for me on our 44' Antigua Ketch Australis from Kudat to Kota Kinabalu in some of the worst sea conditions I have encountered in a long while. 40kts and gusting with green water over the bow and a jammed headsail roller furler, she showed no hesitation in going forward to haul it in and I had no hesitation in handing her the wheel when I had to attend to loose deck gear. Sailing solo, I was extremely fortunate to have her come on board and her calm and cool confidence in a crisis really showed. Lovise is full of laughter, very enthusiastic and a delight to have aboard and would be an asset to any ocean crossing. The fact she didn't hit me after my awful attempts at speaking French certainly earned her extra brownie points!:

* The second pic was taken on the sheltered side of the Cape after we had turned tail and fled!

Default Wrong bucket

I believe you posted this in the wrong place. This is a gear and equipment thread.

I've certainly had crew that would fall into the category of gear and equipment. Also some that would qualify as cabin furniture and some that would be best classed as navigational hazards.

True - I've had other crew I've come close to using as anchors!

I had a fellow with me on a Darwin to Ambon yacht race who, for reasons I will not fully elucidate, became known as Danny the Drogue. While he was 'clipped on', he still became a living testament and fine illustration of why it is folly to pee over the stern in a seaway.

"In a recent survey of all man overboard incidents during a 12 month period, it was revealed that 100% of the people who did not go overboard survived the incident". Also me, during a pre-cruise briefing.

I still think your boat rules were a bit hard on worshippers of Cthulhu ...

True, I will grant you that. Normally I'm very respectful of the personal and religious beliefs of other people and/or beings but I have an aversion to having my brain scooped out and eaten by chittering creatures with tentacles for faces. Call it a self-preservation instinct if you will.

I now believe we're as far off topic as it's possible to get.

Default Crew selection.

If a 150 lb guy gets tossed across the salon, he might get a couple of bruises. If a 250 lb guy does it, things get seriously broken. That's my only red line for crew. Everything from the dingy to the lifelines to the salon cabinetry is not built to withstand that kind of trauma. Go light or go home!
