Default Passage to St Martin

Next year I am finally taking my lifelong dream to the next level by heading south to the lesser Antilles from PR, my departing point will most probably be Virgin Gorda USVI and crossing over to St Martin.
I have heard this could probably be the most difficult crossing of the entire trip and I would like to ask fellow cruisers that have done this crossing before for any tips on the best way to go about it; recommendations as of best time of year to do it and course would be very helpful! As well as any other special considerations I should take into account.

Thanks
