Hello,

I will soon move to HK for a year or two and I would be very grateful for any information and experience with the issues of having boat in HK for longer period and living aboard. I was looking at the RHKYC web for some initial idea about mooring prices, mooring spots etc.

I am looking for some practical information e.g. how convenient it would be to commute (not everyday, but 2-3 times a week) to mainland from Middle Island or Aberdeen or the mooring in Hebe Haven, which of the possible mooring places are preferable etc.

Many thanks any pointers or info

Petr

Hello Petr,

Nice to see you back ! Just to get a fix on what you mean by 'mooring', Does 'mooring' include a berth in a marina, does it include putting an anchor down in an anchorage?

Also clarify mainland ? do you mean the new territories ? You mention commuting 2 -3 times a week --- is by your own transport or by public transport?

In the meantime some answers which should give you a feel for a 'liveaboard' life in

Hong Kong :-

Depending what you are doing and where in Hong Kong, determines the ideal situation when living aboard.

Marinas give the convenience of getting off the boat - but are very expensive - Debentures more so. Most limit the number of liveaboards - and some marinas' waters are highly polluted.

Probably the nicest place to live aboard is in Pak Sha Wan on a mooring in the Hebe Haven

Mooring Area. Then join the Hebe Haven Yacht Club , where you can also park your dinghy and commute from > to Kowloon or Victoria.

If you expand a little on what you will be doing in Hong Kong - and give us some details on your boat - we may be able to provide more specific answers - and links.

Richard

Many thanks Richard, it's nice to be back online, but it was nicer cruising ,

my idea is to be on a mooring buoy (if available, anchor if not), with the possibility of using facilities (shower, garbage, etc.).

By mainland I meant New Territories and Kowloon. I will be working (Hong Kong Polytechnic University).

I would be probably commuting by public transport, but not everyday. If my partner finds work there, she will be commuting probably everyday. I am also thinking about getting a second-hand scooter, which served us so well here in Taiwan.

Yes, I was looking at Hebe Haven as it seemed to be little out of the main traffic.

I am probably going to start there in January, but it's not clear yet when I get the boat there, since I will need to cross from Singapore and the time frame of my start in HK is not yet set.

Somewhere I heard there is a regatta going from SG to HK in mid January, but I could find any info on that, so I am also looking for some practical advise on crossing the South China Sea.

Looking forward to any information you can spare, since our HK budget will be rather tight..., but on a boat we should do better than renting and apartment

Thanks

Petr

Petr.

Generally you should be moving the boat before the North East Monsoon sets in . Still be OK early November - after that Wind on the nose.

Need more info on your boat, dinghy etc .

Here is the Hebe Haven Yacht Club's Visit My Website

You will be required to take a driving license test in Hong Kong. Better to use Hong King's excellent transport facilities (safer!).

Not sure about a regatta from Singapore to Hong Kong. Could be the return leg of a race from Hong Kong to Singapore.

Check with the RHKYC, they will know.

Richard,

boat: Hallberg-Rassy 31', hard dink (Walker Bay 8'), no outboard yet.

Yes, you are probably right about the race, I will ask.

You are right about the public transport, we probably stick to that, we just grown to like our scooter so much

Many thanks

Petr

Richard,

could you advise on anchoring possibilities in HK, where one would be able to reach shore on regular basis. It seems that it might be a problem to find an available mooring (so far Hebe Yacht Club has none). I am inquiring in HKRYC now.

Many thanks

Petr
