Default Porta Potty and Bilge Pump (newbie to this)

My roommate and I just bought a Hunter 25.5' small cruiser and we're complete newbies (no experience). None of the books we've read say ANYTHING about porta-potties. So, how do people ACTUALLY use them? If you're living onboard and cruising the ICW for a while, how often and more importantly WHERE do you empty them. And, do you use the chemicals?

Thanks.

Greetings From Downunder Lauren!

You will be best answered by someone in the particular areas you wish to cruise who is knowledgable of the facilities available there, but the inland waters in Australia I am most conversant with are the Gippsland Lakes in Victoria. I am sure that the States is becoming as concerned about the discharge of untreated sewerage as we are. In the Gippsland Lakes there are a number of "pump out stations" with the capacity to empty the portapotti tank into it. If no such facility is available, it may be possible to empty your tank into the public toilet facilities but I would check locally before undertaking this step. Welcome to the wonderful world of sailing.

Most marinas in the US now have pump-out facilities, usually at the fuel dock. In some places pump-out is free - Florida, for example. In other places there will be a charge, and it can be $5.00.

You will find that you will want to use the chemicals to keep the smell down.

Holding tanks are a fact of life, and have been in the US for around 20 years, so pump out stations are easier to find nowadays. But until you have to use one, you don't notice they're there.

Enjoy your new boat.
