Hello, could you be a little more specific? I see you have a 100ft Motor yacht - what is your working draft? You specifically mention Ghana as an area to cruise, In terms of an anchorage the only one that would be recommended, would be that of TEMA harbour situated at 5º36'North x 0º Greenwich, Diesel is available (but needs fitering) - however Robbery is common place of ships in the harbour. As far as electronic charts are concerned - much better to rely on British Admiralty charts:-

The two that you will need from folio 34 :-

BA 1380 - Ports & Anchorages Ghana, Togo & Benin

BA 3102 - Takoradi and Secondi Bays

The very best anchorage is at ADA in the Volta River Estuary. I used to cross the river bar into the Atlantic breakers every weekend for a year, in a Bertram 42 - 2 engines each of 500hp. If you anchor out beyond the breakers it is possible to follow local fishermen into the river provided your tender has a reliable powerful engine.

There are always the DNCs for free if you have the software to read them. http://www.nga.mil/portal/site/dnc/

Here's the corrected link: http://www.nga.mil/portal/site/dnc/

An editing character got appended by mistake, apparently.

Thanks Jeanne, for finding the correct chart, I presume this is the one being referred to by Magwas ? It covers most of the Atlantic in a single chart from 30 degrees North to 60 degrees South. All that what being asked for is a coastal chart/s of the seas from Ghana to the Cameroons. Can you find such an electronic chart?

What you are referring to is a library of more charts including coastal ones and harbour entries. See "library catalog" box in this page:

I have checked the URL I have given, and it does work.

However the DNC FAQ states:

"""

When will DNC® be available to the public? DNC® will only be made available to the public for selected continental and US territory waters. All DNC® libraries outside of US waters are not available to the general public due to foreign copyright restrictions. """

Sorry, I thought DNCs are available for all waters.

I have a set of files for the med, which means that either there was a policy change since last year, or I have downloaded VDU patches thinking it is the full library.

Copyright is a crime.

Ben,

One of the most unvisited places to visit after the difficulties of going ashore in Ghana, is the Island of Sao Tome. On the North East Coast protected by the from the Guinea current, is Ana Chaves Bay on just North of the equator :- 0º 20' 29.64" North x 6º 43' 36.70" East

Well worth a stopping there for a least a week.

Regards

Richard
