I was directed here by someone on the Sailnet.com forums. This seems like a pretty knowledgable place on first inspection.

I have an opportunity that may present itself towards the end of the year to move out to Bangkok, and was wondering what the scene/weather is like out there. Did a search for marinas and whatnot on Yachtworld and it seems like there's a lot more hits for that kind of stuff in Phuket than Bangkok. I notice that Phuket is on the Andaman Sea and Bangkok is on the Gulf of Thailand. If I move out there, I'll likely be in Bangkok, but I wonder where the best place to keep a boat would be. Plus, I'm interested to know what the rules/regs are for that.

I'm an experienced sailor in the Gulf of Mexico here in the US, but have never done anything international. I'd likely be selling my boat here and buying one out there.

Go easy on me, it's my first post.

Welcome aboard - good to have you here.

"MMNETSEA" will login in a couple of hours (based in South East Asia) and I'm sure he will be able to assist you with all your queries.

Good luck with the move.

Hello BJ,

Welcome to Cruiser Log ! Well done Sailnet!

About 100 miles south east of Bangkok is another world - the first stop would be the Royal Varuna Yacht Club just south of Pattaya Bay here is a link to the club :- RVYC

Then about 4 miles south of the RVYC is the Ocean Marina :- OMYC

From a sailing point of view the Western Gulf has many small islands with anchorages.

Buying a boat is easy - ever since the Government removed all import taxes on boats.

The best place to purchase would be in Phuket or Langkawi Malaysia (just south of Thailand's southern border) although there may also be opportunities to buy in the Gulf.

See Lee Marine

See Simpson Marine

Also BJ if you go back to this topic in the sub forum - we have review of a really first class

Sea Pilot which gives a lot of information about the Gulf of Thailand (Gulf of Siam) SEE

Andaman Sea Pilot in it you will find their website - if you wish to order a copy here is their website, or in fact here is the online guide : ASP

Hello BJ,

I would also try http://pippenmarine.com/ located in Langkawi. I haven't bought a boat from them, but I received a lot of help from the owner.

Good luck

Thanks for all the help, guys.

I've never been to the Pacific Rim before, and if this opportunity matriculates, it's going to be me and one or two other guys working on a venture capital startup firm, probably based on Bangkok, but I might have some say on where we set our office up. My wife and I currently live in Atlanta, and own/maintain a boat in Panama City, which is quite a hike (6 hour drive) to and from our boat. We've always talked about living aboard, and this might be a good opportunity for us to try it, but if so, we'd need to do it pretty close (probably in) Bangkok. If not, we'd need a place that's close by to put a boat. Royal Varuna sounds like a pretty good way to do Option 2.

Hi There,

I live in Bangkok and owe a 43ft Monte Carlo, i keep it at Ocean Marina Yacht Club, 14 KM south of Pattaya. With the much improved road infrastructure, it take me 1 1/2 hours drive from the heart of Bangkok.

Kind regards,

Frank Clovyn
