Gday from a liveaboard in Sydney
Hey All...I'm Tom and I'm a liveaboard in south Sydney on my lil' 38 footer...Im fitting out my yacht to sail north and beyond early next year and for the time being lucky enough to be able to live on and work on my yacht....looking for some cruising items to obtain also such as a windvane, liferaft, watermaker or charts of anywhere north and east of Australia (or east/north aussie coast) too

Hey Tom, Welcome aboard. Where's your yacht moored right now? Mine is in Lane Cove River on a NSW maritime mooring, but currently on the other one in Brisbane due to this weather (although it has been pretty darned cold up here too!)
Windvanes are fairly cheap at Whitworths, the bigger issue being climbing to fit them. Life rafts and watermakers don't usually come up secondhand and frankly I wouldn't buy them if they did, they're usually stuffed. As for charts, consider getting a GPS and AIS and a laptop with OpenCPN on it.
Rob

A Monitor or Fleming windvane might look odd at the top of the mast...Conversely, trying to self steer with a plastic arrow could be a bit of a bugger also..

LOL yes that would be a sight to see and a challenge to utilise haha...
I'm not sure though where to purchase the mentioned items but the boat show is coming up so fingers crossed I'm at Botany bay which I do like as its a lot quiter than the ol Sydney harbour...
Rob I've read your posts with quite an interest mate, hows it all coming up? And now the plane addition, do tell more

Wow, now that's a story in itself. Imagine, if you will, that you've already done 30 hours of pilot training, and always wanted to own an airplane but have never had anywhere to put it. And that you had already bought one, only to resell it due to difficulty shipping from overseas. Yes, it is a long-term want thing.
Then you see it; a tired but complete microlight with removable wings going for peanuts! You count said peanuts and figure that if you go without any boat repairs and food for the next three months it could be yours!
So yeah, I bought an airplane.

Of course, now I'll need a bigger boat so I can load it aboard.
All kidding aside, the ad didn't even specify the make or model, small wonder nobody wanted to bid. Turns out this is a one-off homebuilt that - despite tail markings - has never been registered. A past president of RAANZ lives near the builder and although he knew of the guy, had never heard of the airplane being flown.
In all she's a bit of a mystery ship, but the price I paid would be covered by the value of the trailer and the Rotax 447 engine, which has only run for 8 hours. Getting it registered seems to be fairly easy, but so far wading through RAANZ regulations and requirements for their Inpection Authority nod of approval has been worse than dealing with government.
Anyhow, it's an AKH Rainbow Chaser, S/N 001 built in 2005. Totally unique.

Wow...helluva fun things the microlites...I once upon a time was aspiring to be a pilot but medical tests with the adf proved that I'm 2.5 inches too tall lol..so I joined the submarine squadron (as one does lol) and decided to soar beneath the surface as opposed to above..
Anyhow, congrats on the buy she looks a fine machine and as you say I cant imagine that a microlite would be too hard...a lot of them are built by owner builders...
what about your yachts are they in sydney?

One is in Sydney. The other is in Brisbane which is where I am at the moment.
Have to escape that Sydney winter somehow.

Tom I am Tom living aboard my 38' in Lake Macquarie. DON'T go anywhere without the paper charts and at least the adjoining paper chart. For a start it illegal and secondly you will never lose your chart to a lightning strike.
