I have a bud in Singapore looking into the salvage market for sail boats and inquired about the market in Australia. Anyone have any information on the market, if so, and where?

Regards

RS

Hi RS,

I don't know a whole lot about the salvage market here, but there are a few places which specialise in stripping old yachts and selling parts through their chandleries. I guess it depends if your friend is buying or selling. Yachts in Austalia are relatively expensive, especially second hand. To gauge the approximate state of the second hand market in Oz, go to boatpoint.com.au. It is the largest used boat collection in the country.

You will be amazed by just how much you will have to pay for a 15 to 20 year old Beneteau in fair condition.

Thanks David, and he is looking to buy parts. He is building a wooden one from scratch and I can tell you it ain't cheap in Singapore either. Thanks for the site I'll pass it along.

There is a lot of second hand junk for sale which is generally finding its way into home decor/theme restaurant type places. I have bought some very good gear off ebay.com.au. A lot of it seems to be sold by people who bought and did not install new gear. It can be cheap. Try search headings such as 'yacht', 'sailing', 'boat', perhaps even 'wooden boat'.

I recently bought a brand new bomar 300mmx300mm hatch for $35 off ebay. New price is more like $300. I have just had a quick look through 'yacht' in ebay and I see some good ports, blocks and a winch or two.

Happy searching.

David

PS under 'wooden boat', there are some nice teak handrails and a nice traditional wooden wheel..30" or 76cm, starting bid AU$50 and only two days to run on the auction.

Thanks again... I will forward... Knowing Jeff as well as I do this building project of this more than likely will make the Aircraft Carrier Ronald Reagan look like a row boat..
