Default Trouble in Mexico

Looks like some cruisers are having trouble in Mexico. Impounding a boat over a $70 permit seems a little harsh!

US, Canadian boaters left in limbo in Mexico

Yea, it's an oddity for sure. So many people love cruising in MX so this is going to hit hard. There is some history--hopefully it will all come out in the wash. Good luck to all the cruisers in MX right now.

This same 'raid' was played out on the Pacific coast about a month ago. Marina owners were very unhappy...probably more unhappy than the boat owners. The temporary import permit is cheap and valid for 10 years. Considering what is happening with cruising taxes in Greece right now and the cost of entering many Pacific Ocean ports, it seems to me that $7 a year for virtually permanent entry to Mexico is a pretty good deal.

The execution of the investigation was way over the top. But there again, anyone who knows Mexico will understand that the Federales dash down to the shop wearing flak jackets and waving machine guns everywhere; just because 'Juan' has run out of cigarettes, or needs to buy a bottle of Coke.
