From: www.stuff.co.nz

"Maurice Conti and his wife Sophie sailed for two and a half hours early on Monday morning to rescue three people, including Southland woman Ali Timms, whose yacht Timella sank after it hit a reef off an island in Fiji.

No one else heard the mayday call from the "Timella".

The Contis decided the only option was to mount the rescue themselves, fighting against strong winds and high seas. They managed to rescue Mrs Timms and her Australia companions, Elizabeth Schoch and yacht owner Cameron Scagle."

In this e-mail sent to The Southland Times today by Captain Maurice, he recounts the drama.

wow - sobering reading.

Found ourselves wondering how we would cope in either situation (rescued or rescuer) with our present set up on board.

One immediate thing that comes to mind is to purchase that VHF handheld we've been promising ourselves and collate, print and laminate a list of contacts for the areas we'll be cruising through on our trip.

The rest we are still digesting but it strikes us that we all tend to look at our own set ups in the light of our own safety - it's a little more sobering to ask the question - how prepared are we and our vessels to rescue someone else?

Thanks for the link

MrJ and I knew Timella from Hiva Oa to Raratonga, where the first crew went to Australia with skipper Cam and back to Scotland. We did not know any of the second crew who where on board at the time of the grounding.

It is always sad to hear of boats being lost at see. Thank goodness the people all survived this one.

A big thank you to Maurice Conti and his wife Sophie.

Congratulations to Mr Conti and his wife for a job well done. They deserve a medal. That story put a shiver down my spine then a tear in the eye.

Cheers Tezza.

Ps was the Timella disabled when she went aground?
