I read about the Lagoon 440 diesel/electric system, and it seems too good to be true.

I understand the physics (modern submarines use this), but is it practical to use? Do you really get almost unlimited electricity while under sail power? How is the drag? What considerations do you need to keep in mind when operating the engines as generators?
