Default Gear for Boat

G’day folks,

Apologies if this is the wrong forum for this kind of request (suggestions for other websites most welcome), I’m helping out on a boat-building project based in Kilifi Bay, Kenya. The boat, Musafir, is a 70-foot traditional dhow being built by volunteering travellers possessing a variety of skills and talents (everybody is welcome to help out. Food and accommodation is provided).

For more information about the project, check out musafir.org

I’m providing here a list of things we need for the boat. If anyone knows of anyone selling or willing to donate (shipping costs are on us) any of the following, we’ll be eternally grateful:

- 250hp engine 6 cylindar inline
- Bilge pump plus spare parts
- 3” shaft propeller with 4 large rotors
- 4 x solar panel at 150 watts
- GPS
- Fish Finder
- CB Radio
- Antenna
- Life raft
- Inflatable dinghy
- Circuit board for the electronics
- Batteries
- Power invertor
- Cruising books
- Charts
- Navigation Lights
- SCUBA compressor + dive equipment

Thanks! Happy sails

Default Question regarding insurance

Hi sailors,

My name is Simon. I've recently joined this project: musafir.org.
It's basically a collective community of travellers that have collected together to build a 70-foot jahzi - a traditional Swahili sailing dhow.

It's been built over four years and we hope to set sail in January 2016.

The idea is to give a platform for an alternative lifestyle. We'll be sailing to remote coastal communities around the world, interacting with music, arts, exchanging knowledge of building, culture, language, raising awareness regarding the environment and sustainability, beach clean ups and whatever project the community we'll visit would like us to help with.

The boat is volunteer based that can accommodate up to 20 volunteers at a time. We'll have a professional sailing crew that will teach us the ways of the sea.

My question is, for a boat of this size - a 70-foot, five-meter high wooden boat, which insurance company should we turn to?

Appreciate any response and advice.

The Nomad

Ask your surveyor which company he would recommend. If you did not have a local surveyor follow the build, get in touch with one and start the process so you'll be insure-able. Best of luck!

Make sure the plans for the boat include all the requirements which will alter the status of the vessel from recreational use to charter. There are several important inclusions which could affect the insurance companies' willingness to cover the boat.
As Red says, work closely with your surveyor, heed his or her advice on the building of the vessel and seek his recommendations regarding insurance.
