We are a Swiss couple (both 26) traveling by bicycle (from Switzerland to lndia) and we are now looking for a free sail to Oman preferably (U.A.E. or Iran might be considered as well).

Willing to cook, clean, childcare or any other work (painting, letc.); specialists in computer and biology/geography. Speaking German, English, French and some Spanish.

Departure ports might be Suez, Sharm el Sheikh or Hurghada Safaga. Getting to these ports could take us up to three days and we need to leave Egypt latest at 22 of January 2011.

Please contact by phone 0041 76 439 39 58 or e-mail hello@wegoeast.ch (not checked daily).

See you!

PS: Visit www.wegoeast.ch to see our journey so far.

Finding a sailboat that departs Egypt to arrive in Oman or the UAE will be very difficult. Most sail boats when finally exiting the Gulf of Aden proceed directly for India or the Northern Maldives as their first stop. Assuming that you will want to take two cruising land bicycles, is another factor not in your favour; Only very large yachts would have the room and even then the bikes would probably have to be secured on deck in the elements - means salt spray, means corrosion.

You might be able to get an unpaid crew job on a large motor yacht. This would require to be in a place like Suez, long before the 22nd January. The Suez Canal Yacht Club would be a good place to contact and leave your particulars.

Noonsite.com have this info regarding the yacht club

"Suez Canal Yacht Club

Port Tewfik, (located beyond the Canal Authority office, on the L/H side of the entrance to the canal.)

Used to dealing with yachts in transit and are very helpful. Yachts can be left here if wishing to make a trip to the Pyramids. Floating dock, moorings and free wireless. The mooring fees were increased as of June 2009, see report adjacent. It is possible to go alongside at high tide (or if you have shallow enough draft) to take on water.

All club facilities are available to visitors, such as showers, laundry and a bar which serves non-alcoholic drinks only. Foreign sailors are supposed to use a special gate when leaving the club premises where shore passes as well as bags will be checked by customs officers who are on permanent duty. No equipment may be taken ashore without permission from customs, so arrangements should be made through one's agent before taking any equipment to be repaired. "

Another issue I hope you have considered is that of piracy.

Should you be fortunate (?) enough to get passage from Egypt to Oman, once clear of Bab-el-Mendeb you will be passing through an area of known piracy.

Just one other point, I understand that you have changed your plans and are no longer considering cycling south through Egypt and crossing the Red Sea to Yemen and, then, cycling through Yemen to reach Oman. This was never a good idea. I spent two years in Yemen and see that you planned to cycle through the Rub' al-Khali, the so called Empty Quarter. Do not even consider that as there is almost nothing there: no food, no water, nothing. In fact, you probably will be turned back at the first roadblock on the outskirts of Al-Huydayda, where it appears you were planning on entering the country, as you would not be allowed to travel many of the country's roads without a miltary escort. Every time I had to drive between Ataq and Bir Ali I had a pickup ahead and behind me on which were mounted 20mm machine guns.

Aside from the above, Yemenis drive like maniacs, che Kat whilst doing so and have probably the worst maintained vehicles on the planet. For sfety's sake, all domestic transport should be done by air.

Good luck to you, however you travel.
