Just a personal opinion , but I would NOT attempt the Suez .. too many risks.

Ok the only way to go is via SA and there is TONS of info availabe to you through this BB, on that leg.

Is your final destination the "Land of the Long White Cloud"? If so , go SA, Inddian Ocean , OZ and cross the Tasman.

I went through Suez canal last year (May) but can't help with costs as this was all handled by skipper. Must say that we had a tremendous time and both pilots (mandatory) Suez to Ismalia/Ismalia to Port Said were great.

We filled up with cheap diesel (must ask for Benzine) at Ismalia but because there are no fuelling facilities at Yacht club we needed to make half a dozen trips into town filling 7 jerry cans at a time at the first petrol station we came to.

We played the unsuspecting tourists and only paid local price per litre. Apparently yachties are supposed to be charged tax. First station we used this was no problem but when we changed stations due to faulty pump a little old lady became very boisterous - waving arms around, shouting at bloke serving us...but we were not charged any extra.

Local guards at Yacht Club were not very helpful as they would not let taxi take us to the club gate. We had to get out at the checkpoint each time and struggle with 2 jerry cans each over the 250 metres to where yacht was tied. Alright the first time but after a few trips and in the heat of the day...

Sorry I can't help with costs but I know skipper was very happy with cost per litre.

We used Prince of the Red Sea as the agent who handled all transit charges.

In 2004 we paid (for total transit, incl. agent) about U$ 140 (40 t boat). Diesel costed 9 dollarcents in Ismalia, arranged by a cab-driver and including his fee.....

BTW:

Don't pay to much attention to all the horror-stories about the Red Sea. Every year hundreds of yachts pass there without an trouble. With good information and planning the risks are less then a day an NY.

Hi, The cost in 2000 heading North for an 11 metre catamaran was US$200, all up(Prince of the Red Sea). Heading South in 2003 the charge was US$300(Felix). Heading South has normaly been more expensive. Your agent will arrange for the canal authority to measure your vessel on arrival. Most of the cost is for the agent and pilots. It pays to talk/email to agent before arrival and barter a price. Pilots also expect Baksheesh, normally US$10 and cigarettes. Diesel in 2003 was about 14 cents per litre in Port Suez, direct from pump onto yacht. In Eritrea it was about 20 cents and in Aden it was 22 cents per litre. Prices will vary a little. Happy Sailing.

Regards, Stephen
