Hello all,

Anyone out there familiar with the yacht built for export scheme in Australia? I'm searching the web for specific info, but coming up shy. I read one article mentioning that a person can avoid paying the 10%GST if the vessel clears out within 60 days of launch and is registered elsewhere. Any leads would be appreciated!

Best - Jay

Hi Jay,

The best place to go for information on this is the Oz authorities. You could try the Department of Taxation...they will be glad to help . (Press #1 and wait six years) or, for genuine assistance Customs are generally pretty good. Try starting here http://www.customs.gov.au/site/page.cfm?u=4365 . Best of luck.

David

Hi Jay,

Here is an extract from the Australian Taxation Office web site:

"Exports of goods

Exported goods are GST-free if they are exported from Australia either before, or within, 60 days of the first of the following two events:

the supplier receives any payment for the goods, or

the supplier issues an invoice for the goods.

In the case of goods paid for by instalments the payment referred to is any part of the final instalment and the invoice referred to is the invoice for the final instalment.

The supplier can apply to the Tax Office to extend the 60-day period.

If you need help in applying this information to your own situation, contact us by phone.

International callers can contact the Tax Office by phoning +61 2 6216 1111 between the hours of 8.00am to 5.00pm (Australian Eastern Standard Time or daylight-saving time) and ask for your call to be transferred to the appropriate area within the Tax Office. "

Hope it works for you.

Robert

Hi Jay,

Just saw your other post about building a boat in Brisbane. That changes the GST picture a bit.

The way the 10% GST works in Australia is that it is added to the sale price of most items.

If you bought a boat from a boatbuilder and exported it within 60 days, the boatbuilder would not need to pay 10% GST and so could reduce the cost of the boat by up to 10%.

However, if you build the boat yourself, there would not be any "sale" on which GST would be charged, so it is not a major issue. You would, however, have paid GST on the components, shed hire, etc as you build the boat.

The only way you can claim back GST on the components etc is if you are registered as a business (ie a boat building business), which brings a lot of other issues (tax on profits, etc), plus you would need to sell the yacht to really be in business! Businesses can claim back a refund on any GST they pay on components.

Although I am an Australian, I am not a tax expert. However, the above is my understanding of the situation. It may help you ask more specific questions of the tax office in Australia.

cheers,

Robert

RE: GST

We checked out of Australia for the last time 10 years ago, so my memory is spotty and things might have (probably have) changed.

I believe that 1997 was the first or second year of GST, and so what applied then might very well have changed. (that's 2 disclaimers!)

Foreign boats that had work done in Australia were able to fill out forms provided by the tax office to apply for a refund of GST paid on work/materials for the boat.

That's as far as I remember, but it might be worth another question to the tax office.
