Default Free Anchorages in California

I put this tool together as a guide to free anchorages along the California coastline to help as a kind of passage-planner. Hopefully other boaters can get some use out of it. It lists the anchorages and links to the NOAA online chart viewer. Looking for suggestions and recommendations to improve the tool. I have never sailed above San Francisco so I'm pretty sketchy on anchorages North of there and would appreciate any information anyone can give. Hope you like the tool, you can see it HERE.

North of San Francisco, there be dragons.

Thanks for contributing. This is something I will use.

A lot of the anchorages are not ones we would prefer to use, though. If you've been there, lat/long of nice places would be very useful along with comments. The cruiser wiki is a really good place to put that, too.

I hope it proves valuable to the community. I knew about some of these anchorages on the way down but I got most of the information from either dropping the hook there or chatting with other salty souls. One old fella in particular who has lived rent free along the California coast for over 40 years in his old Tahiti ketch. What a character!

OH and I was in SF last week visiting some of the anchor-outs there and they confirmed your story about dragons.

As far as I can tell, the dragons are frozen solid. I'm still not used to the extreme cold north of 33 degrees latitude in California.

San Diego is bad enough. In the summer the temperatures there can soar to the low 70's and in the winter they can plunge to the high 60's.

It's just not habitable land.

Tell me about it, I used to live on my boat up there with no heat! The good news is that, after that, everywhere else seems positively balmy.
