Hi
Having been down the coast from Victoria to several hundred miles off Baja Mexico in mid-late September 2008, before turning with trades to sail to Maui. Generally it is suggested to go out at least several hundred miles to get away from the continental shelf and resulting confused wave action. This will also keep you off a dangerous lee shore of the Washington/ Oregon coast and generally away from shipping. The Pacific off Washington coast can be a cold and very rough place, but generally better in the summer months. Also, this avoids low pressure gales just off the California coast which plague the summertime. Then there's hurricanes from the gulf of mexico to contend with during the summer months June-October. Highly recommend you have a weather fax and use it 24/7 and learn how to read them and see the patterns. This is not a good trip for newbies to off shore sailing. Recommend you have a survival suit for all aboard and a good offshore liferaft, as well as a very well found yacht, and a SAT phone. Also, some plain old Good Luck helps with the weather. Cheers!
