This was just posted on noonsite, however the date seems a bit off and I think they mean 19S degrees not 190 S degrees.

For those that didn't know about the missing NZ couple...

That is sad. The status of the crew remains a mystery. Hope, minimal.

I read the coordinates as:

The remains of the yacht are at 19°56.8 S and 174°29.5 W

Perhaps the degree symbol was displayed as the # 0 or letter O?

I wonder why they choose to cast off off with only a reciever, and not a long range transmitter, or an emergency distress beacon. And why they did not keep somebody posted on their progress and status. Without knowing more details it would be unfair to judge their decissions. Perhaps things went bad, one after another. E.g. weather, systems failures. It would be interesting to know if they found clues on the vessel, a log or otherwise.

Prayers

We've met several low budget cruisers who did not have an HF transmitter. A receiver can be bought quite reasonably, for perhaps $100 or so, and can be used to received weather fax and listen to the various HAM weather nets. They felt that was enough for them.

Same thing for an EPIRB. They are expensive.

Without HF radio, they would have been out of radio range of land after only a day. How sad.

Always so sad when anyones at risk at sea - but even tho' some ot the text on the link is covered from my view - it appears they did carry an EPIRB.

I appreciate if this is true and it has not been triggered, the risk of loss increases.

My thoughts go to them and their families.

It is so sad when you hear of fellow ocean sailors in trouble. We are hopefull for a successfull out come. This always reminds us that ocean sailors are a true global village linked in ways that only sailors understand.

As far as HF radios go, the spcz can be very unpredictable with winds and seaways building quickly with a forecast of good weather turning nasty with out notice. We have had long disscussions with Bob Mcdavitt from Met weather NZ (he does the weather gram for the South Pacfic) and he would aggree. The area they were sailing in is known for this type of weather at this time of year. HF radios are a great tool but not having one would not keep me ashore.

Apparently, there was a message written on the side of the hull from the couple. "Help 2 P.O.B."

And to think we were just talking about this very subject wrt the movie Open Water 2, Adrift.
