The Bundaberg couple were rescued after the husband was injured and now may have lost the uninsured $150,000 vessel.

The 12m boat Illusion was reluctantly abandoned by Ann and Chris Robinson 390 nautical miles east of Bundaberg on Wednesday, when they were taken on board a rescue ship.

The chance of recovering the yacht, which was left drifting in the Coral Sea away from Australia, is remote.

The Bargara couple, in their 50s, were sailing to New Caledonia when they hit wild weather and were battered by 50 to 70-knot winds last week.

Mr Robinson's seriously injured his leg when it got tangled in a line when he threw out a sea anchor to stabilise the boat, and his wife had to cut him free and pull him to safety.

An interesting postscript to this story was that "Illusion" ended up sailing all by herself; avoiding countless reefs and outcrops to bump gently onto the sand in the Louisiades PNG just a few days before the Cairns - Louisiades Yacht Rally arrived in the island chain.

While she arrived in perfect condition, it only took a few days for some of the locals to totally strip her to a bare hull!

This opportunistic salvaging seems to be pretty common in the area as one of the Cairns Rally yachts was side swiped by a rogue wave and ended up being carried across the reef flat to be deposited, in an almost perfectly upright position, on the beach. The owners escaped without a scratch and the vessel sustained a small crack in the base of the hull.

However, under instructions from their insurance company to leave the vessel where it was, they returned to Cairns only to find some doubt as to their policy standing (still being negotiated - hopefully to a positive conclusion).

A few days later they returned to the Louisiades to discover their pride and joy had also been stripped with considerable internal damage done by a host of local visitors.

With tremendous effort and support, the Rally organisers and the rest of the fleet were able to jury rig the vessel from donated equipment from amongst their participants and the vessel was floated off and sailed back to Cairns where she now sits on the hard. A great effort by everyone!

Sailing in company has a lot going for it!
