Default Sailing San Francisco to Seattle

I planning to sail a 37 Valiant from Frisco to Seattle. Can anyone give me helpful tips on strategy? Go far offshore or hop along the coast? I am experienced offshore in power vessels but have less experience in sail, but confident. Thank you

Depends on time of year you plan to go. Coast of Oregon/Washington is rightfully considered among the worst lee shores worldwide during November - April stretch. And entering harbors along that stretch is never a comfortable option in dusty weather because they almost all have a formidable bar to cross.

The other thing you should consider is being certain to get at least 50-75 miles off of Cape Mendicino, especially at night in the summer. Downdraft can come tearing down the western mountain slopes after daytime heating is over, producing a katabatic wind that can set you on your beam ends with no warning.

When you turn into Strait of Juan de Fuca, you'll realize you're in a great place. Have a good sail.
