Hi all

What a great forum. Congratulations.

We are a father (John 62) and adult son (Chris 27) arriving in San Diego on April 17 to shop around for a yacht to sail back to Australia. Chris is paying. I'm just along for the ride.

Fortunately we have friends at Solana Beach who we can stay with.

Our best case scenario is that we will purchase and refit as necessary a yacht fairly quickly and be on our way and worst case scenario is that we will get to spend some time with friends in spring in Southern California and fly back with a lot more knowledge about buying a yacht on west coast USA.

We live in Cairns on the Great Barrier Reef in Queensland.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Bye for now

Johnno

Welcome,

Give us an idea of the type of boat you are looking for.

In the mean time San Diego has thousands of boats to look at ::

Thank you for the welcome.

Chris wants to use it as a liveaboard in Cairns yet it has to be seaworthy enough to make the 6,000

nm passage via Hawaii, Gilbert Islands, Solomon Islands, Cairns.

Budget is US$35,000 tops including cost of any refit.

Fibreglass, 32ft+, full keel, autopilot, wind/solar generator, fridge/freezer, tender with

outboard, good sails, good engine, sounder, ssb radio, vhf radio, sound rigging is the essential

wish list.

I guess that about covers it. We realise that the budget is at the lower end for a sailboat for a

trans Pacific passage but we are hopeful that we will find something within that price range.

I should have also said that we are only interested in boats between LA and San Diego. We won't have the time to go shopping any further afield than that. Also, it needs to be the West Coast to cut down the travelling distance and coming from Cairns (latitude 16 degrees South) we don't function in temperatures below say 68F . Yes, I know!

There are some good California options in there though so we'll try and track them down. Thank you very much for your assistance.

Thanks Lighthouse. I travelled through South Africa in the seventies and worked as a steward on South African railways. Crossing the Pacific can't be harder than that!

Met my wife over that way. She's from Zimbabwe.

With a limited area in which to hunt down a boat that meets your criteria - a popular boat that has a good offshore reputation is the Islander - the one identified :-

36' Islander - Islander 36 1974 $ 34,900 San Diego, CA - this design and year is fairly common and although over 30 years old - still a very good cruising boat

The 36 has a strong Association with many members who can assist you in your search.

Visit their Website here.

The only caveat is to have the boat out of the water for an osmosis check during survey - money worth spending.

All the best - did your wife come from Bulawayo ?

Regards

Richard

The best deals in this lower price range come via the papers and online listings, NOT yacht brokers, by the way. When you get close to showing up, check out the craigslist.org for San Diego, the Log online, Latitude 38, etc.

Then it just comes down to finding one with rigging that will make it, IMHO. You can make due with fit-finish problems, a "shy engine" or sketchy on the interior systems (refrig, pressure water, etc) but the rig has to make it the whole way!

We'll look forward with interest to your sailboat buying adventure when you arrive here

Hello Johnno,

There are a couple of issues you may already be aware of - these relate to #1. the importation of a boat into Australia and #2. the prior advice of arrival of the boat to customs.

It might be useful to see Customs and the Dept that deals with the Marine Environment in Cairns - before you leave for the US.

Here is the Link with rules pertaining to the importation :- Import link

Here is the Link regarding prior advice of arrival to Customs :-

Prior advice

Thanks for that thumbs up on the Islander 36 Richard. Definitely sounds like an option if a sound one is available when we arrive. I'll get in touch with the Association.

Yes my wife (nee Mary Tuke) did live in Bulawayo for for most of her life in Zim, born in what used to be called Sinoia. She's been in Australia since 1976.

Yes we are going to visit Customs in Cairns this week. We allowed 15% in our budgeting for GST + import duty on the cost of the boat and the passage costs. We are going to ask them how they will assess the passage costs.
