Hi,

I am picking up my new catamaran somewhere in the Leewards/Windwards and need to get it to Panama canal. I thought first about sailing direct to Panama as this would be a down wind sail but in reading Cornell's book they say this can be a really hard sail. The book said some sail down island and then across the top of South America over to Panama. Then I heard that things can be pretty rough in Western Venezuela and Colombia. So, my question is what is the preferred route to get to Panama? Did I mention that my boat will be arriving in December and I need to have it through the canal by March. There must be quite a few people who have done this on a circumnavigation. Any thoughts/ideas would be appreciated.

thanks in advance,

Lori

My friend just did the opposite this spring. It took him several months, because everything is on the nose. It should be a really fast ride for you no matter where you leave from in the islands.. You will need a tiny headsail, no main, and some sunscreen......LOLOLOLOLOL

You should head to Grenada and then west, sticking to the offshore islands of Venezuela and the ABC's to make your passage in a relatively easy manner. There are definitely security issues and here is the Venezuelan assessment of the RISK...stick to the Green!
