We are wanting to set up a website/blog to document our circumnavigation. Are there any suggestions on how to go about this as cheaply as possible? We unfortunately know nothing about websites so whatever we use it must be "websites for Dummies".

The idea is to keep our family & friends updated of our whereabouts (with photographs, etc., if possible) - something a little more permanent than simple email communications. A website will be a record of our voyage.

It must be easy to maintain and update as well as cost efficient.

How does everyone do this? Suggestions will be appreciated.

Hi Aaron,

I would offer that you have a look at SailBlogs, http://www.sailblogs.com, as one of the main sites cruisers use for keeping their on-line journals and photos. I have run the site for over two years now, and it is becoming very popular with sailors and circumnavigators.

SailBlogs can handle text, photos, video and tracking - all in a nice sailing-oriented package, and also allows you to post to the journal - both text and pics - while off-shore using any email (Iridium or maybe Winlink or SailMail). In fact, support for SailBlogs journals has been fully integrated into SailMail, so posting from offshore is dead simple.

When you are not offshore and have a more normal connection, the web interface is very friendly and easy to use. To set up a journal, you just register with the site, pick a template, and start adding posts. There are many other options as well to personalize your page, but you can add those as you get more comfortable with the system.

The tracking option will automatically build a web map for you, as well as generate a google earth feed for super-detailed tracking of your trip.

Accounts are free to set up, and there are three levels of premium membership after that. I would invite you to set up a free account and try it out, ask any questions you might have and then decide if the system might meet your needs (and I think it will).

You can also have a look at many of the other member's journals here: http://www.sailblogs.com/member_list.php which should give you a pretty good idea of how sailors are using the system for their web site.

Thanks,

Tim

I would endorse what Tim says about Sailblogs. It is a good, easy and very popular system and the support is exceptional.

We also use sailblogs and have found Tim always ready to help with support issues. We also set up a free website using talkspot.com, from which we link to sailblogs.

Hi All,

We'd certainly recommend using our site, GetJealous.com for your trip. It allows you to easily perform all the usual travel blogging features such as uploading photos and videos, writing a diary, and a message board. It also has an interactive mapping system which will link all your photos and diaries together as one of your friends hovers their mouse over your route.

We have a large number of sailors using the site, who use our facilities to write their entries off-line. You can also use our GPS mapping facility which even allow you to update your map by sending a standard rate sms with your current co-ordinates.

GetJealous.com is free to sign up so take a look and we hope you'll be impressed.

All the best,

George

Our MV Watermelon's blog is on sailblogs - http://www.sailblogs.com/member/mvmelon/

I need something very easy to use because I just don't have the time or the motivation to learn anything complicated ("it's tough to get old"). Sailblogs is very easy for me to use, which I appreciate.

As a land-locked 'cruiser', I live my life through the various writings and photos of those lucky enough to be doing what I dream of. I find the Sailblogs site a real treasure and looks like it would be very simple to use.

Who knows, maybe one day...
