Hello All,

Having sailed the Caribbean and the Bahamas it seems the next logical step is the South Pacific.

If there are previous posts concerning bareboating in that area could someone Please point me to them.

We are looking for a good bareboat Catamaran charter company for at least 4 weeks of sailing. There are only two of us and we dont have unlimited funds so if anyone has a better idea that would be appreciated. Any other couples out there want to go : ). Or is anyone out there now who needs crew ??

I am also looking for the best charts and cruising guides for that area.

We are looking at next January and February but will the rainy season be a problem ??

Getting there from Massachusetts should be fun ...

Any Help will be GREATLY APPRECIATED !!!!!!

FAIR WINDS EVERYONE !!!!!!

TOM & DIANA

Hi Tom and Diana,

Both The Moorings and Sunsail have their bases in Apooiti Marina in Raiatea. Sunsail will have the new Leopard 38 catamarans in as there are two of them scheduled to leave Cape Town in about 2 months time.

It is the most amazing area to “discover”. The drawbacks are the long flights – there used to be direct flights out of LAX to Papeete and then a short island hop to Raiatea. The airport in Raiatea is a two minute drive to the marina. Another big drawback is that everything in French Polynesia is VERY expensive.

How about Tonga? http://www.tongasailing.com/fleet.htm

Vava'u and surrounds is good cruising. a lot like the Virgin Islands in the Caribbean. Expensive. Yes.

January and February is cyclone season. Forget rain, think hurricanes. but, as in the Caribbean, there aren't a lot, and I don't think Tonga has been hit with one in several years. Not sure about the rain. Cruisers tend to not be there during cyclone season, and the locals just take whatever comes along.

I know, I'm not very helpful here, but maybe somebody else can come along and fill in the blanks.

THANK YOU BOTH FOR YOUR REPLYS - The rainy season does concern me . We both work during the dry season. It looks like the best way to do this cost wise is to buy a boat and sail there , and just stay until we see all of the area. The plane ride is just too long and expensive to be washed out .

THE DREAM CONTINUES >

THANKS AGAIN
