Default California to Guatemala?

My husband and I are trying to get to Guatemala to see my family (this is where they live) . We cant fly because I am scared to death of it. We would like to experience other countries anyways! We are both inexperienced on boats but are willing to pay our way. We would like to leave in MArch or April. Any suggestions?

Most California sailors will leave for Mexico in October/November, or so, and take several weeks to get down there. Most won't consider going to Guatemala, and those that do won't do so until near the beginning of hurricane season, which is June 1. So you're not likely to find someone to take you on in the time line you're looking for.

Better to take trains and buses. Buses are usually very good in Central america because the majority of residents depend on buses to get them everywhere. Not as many automobiles down there as in the US.

Good luck.
