Cruising north from California to BC

I know enough to know how little I know, but sure would like to know where I can find some more info on the trip from LA to Vancouver by sailboat. I have heard it is an uncomfortable and unpredictable trip, but can find no references to the cruise. It seems folks from California either truck their boats north and then head up the inland passage to Alaska.... or to Hawaii or Mexico on extended cruises.... or else the don't write about their trips. At this point I have not purchased a boat. I am looking at heavy, full keeled motorsailers and pilothouse sloops and ketches in the 32 to 38 foot range, probably with a canoe stern. I'd probably take on one crew member for the journey. So what can you folks tell me?

The trip is somewhat challenging in either direction, and has been known to cause more than one Blue Water Divorce. The full keel heavy motor sailor will help, but still expect to get tossd around a bit. More than a few cruisers I've met have had their boats trucked back up once they did the down hill run from Canada.
