I met a guy in a bar in Horta in 2001 who had a steel boat called Polar Bear ,I can`t remember his name but he was a pleasant old guy and invited me to come aboard and look around his boat ,he had a good set up ,he built the boat himself with a friend.Hope this helps.John.

I met the same guy in Providencia (off the coast of Nicaragua). A really nice couple, and after hearing some of his stories, he has become something of a personal hero. We were there for what I seem to remember as his 70th birthday. He spent his 60th birthday having just rounded cape horn singlehanded on Polar Bear (a green steel boat he built with a partner). His birthday present to himself was a cupcake with a candle in it, having just made it through in one piece. We didnt visit with them long, but She taught My wife how to make tortillas. A nice couple, and for someone so experienced he was very unassuming. His partner had to get him to tell the story of his 60th with a bit of cohersion. Nice folks.
