Here was a man who always followed his dreams. An interesting man with a strong personality.

He paid $1.5 million to build American Promise, the boat he sailed non-stop around the world. It had roller furler everything, electric winches, and an emergency reefing system in case anything, including power, failed - a shotgun.

Here's an interesting article about him and his "flotilla of watercraft" Hermit of Snow Island

Rest in peace, Dodge. You were an inspiration to many.

Thanks for that , Jeanne/Peter. Dodge was indeed an inspiration to many both on land & sea. Sure hope everyone learns from this determination to follow 'his dream'. Thanks for that & I did read that 'site'. I'll chase up more on his exploits & see how much I can learn. Winter's coming at your end, yuukkkkd ! Raining fit to 'float-a-boat here - that's also a bit 'yuukkk !! Tnx again, james

I am saddened to hear these news.

I had read his "American Promise" book and it inspired me along with many others. Few years after the publication he part of a "Safety at Sea" seminar in Annapolis in the US and I not only met him but had a long chat with him. I was just starting solo cruising but still apprehensive. He was very supportive and encouraging.
