Default EYE SPLICES VS TAPE

hi all

does anyone know of a good online reference to splicing multi-braid line?

i am trying to re-do an eye splice on several spectra / dyneema / UHMPE lines (01 main halyard and 02 running backstays)

any opinions on whether just doubling the core back to form an eye, then taping the same down with 3M cloth tape and running the sleeve back over again will suffice?

Please see this explanation - http://www.neropes.com/splice/sp21_db_core..._eye_splice.htm.

And no (in my humble opinion). Your tape idea on the lines you describe will not be strong enough.

Cheers

JOHN

Here's Samson Ropes web site for splicing:

There are a number of web sites that can help you. Do a Google search.

You must know your rope, though. Not all halyards are double braid. Some have a laid core, and the splicing technique is quite different.

Splicing is important. Knots are far weaker than splices. You need to do it correctly, or you may as well not do it at all. You also need to have the correct gear. Splicing fids are important.

Good luck.

It is better to tie a bowline to form a loop, then whip the tail to the line than to form a taped loop with just the core. But the resultant knot will still be around 15% weaker than a properly formed splice. So your 12,000lb spectra will effectively become 10,000lb. A good set of fids cost me AU$150 and I still cannot make a proper eye splice in spectra. Unless you are offshore and making repairs, I think it is a better bet by far to use the services of a professional, whose charge will not be excessive. For the sake of interest I use 12mm spectra with a load rating of 13000lb for my running backstays. My mast compression is 56,000lb and the eye splices in the backstays at at rigging shop cost me $AU20 each. Peace of mind at a bargain price!

Best wishes. David.
