I did some sailing with some folks, for about 3 months and idk, maybe 2000++ miles. Now I'm thinking about getting some more time on the "ropes" and should I be documenting it? And how? Do I need an official logbook, a notarized statement from the people I sailed with? What sort of qualifications do they need to have to document my time?
I am a US citizen, so I will be going to the USCG to get the license (unless someone has a different/better idea?) I can't remember the exact details but I think in addition to passing whatever tests they give, you also need to have proof of maybe 300 or so days sailed in the past 10 years, a certain percentage of that being within the last 3 I believe. Sorry to be so fuzzy on details but I'm sure someone here has gone through the process and can enlighten me?
Last time I had one of the captains sign a piece of paper that said (a bit more flowery of course, I'm paraphrasing): "Bear sailed with me from this date to that, covering such and such miles, signed, Captain Bligh" And he stamped it with his boat stamp. Will the USCG accept that? If not, what do I need?
