Still to finish replacing all the gear on Mico after the cyclone. Robin did an excellent job securing her while I was in PNG. Still raining - monsoonal strength - lawns that you would disappear into in seconds if you trod on them and I am so hanging out to get back on the water.

One of the reasons for my eagerness is a new toy I purchased recently - the GO PRO HD video. Wide angle, water proof to a depth of 60m (have just taken it down that far mounted in the middle of my strobes atop the underwater camera housing on assignment for a client) Full sound and a quality that is better than the HD sony I use for TV commercials. And guess what? It's as big as a matchbox

I also picked up all the mounting attachments and mounted it at water level on a high speed dive boat. It has a suction cup I have used to mount it on the underside of an aircraft flying over the mountains of PNG. If you watch any extreme sport on the tube - thats what they use. Price - $350

Now start considering where my mind is going in relation to a low cost yachtie option : mounted on the outer end of the kite pole, looking back onto the vessel, placed at the end of its extendable pole and lowered over the bow underwater as dolphins race in front, flown from a kite looking back down onto the yacht from above - mounted to any one of the dodger poles with its clamp attachments - mounted on the bow rail looking back.

No - I'm not on commission but after editing vision for some corporate presentations - I'm pretty stoked! : see further for this great hands free HD option:

We've been watching the products put forth by GoPro and think they're fantastic. We've considered getting one to play with, but have not done so yet.

We recently did pick up a small Panasonic DMC-zs7 which has an Ikelite housing for use underwater. It is a 12.1 MP camera with a 14 MP sensor size and has an optical 12x zoom but a 16x zoom total on the camera is possible due to sensor size and interpolation. Street price in the camera is a bit over $200 but the Ikelite housing adds another $200 street price. There are some wonderful cameras out there right now

I heard that the lead manufacturers of video camera components and gear in Japan was doing so well they have moved into smaller premises.

Yes - they are now operating from a post box address. Cheaper rent but the removalists had a bugger of a time getting the office desks and furniture in there!

Great post and really sharp video - my wife and I are in the shopping/equipping phase of the Dream and she brought up cameras yesterday. This looks like a great addition! Thanks (hope they give you a commission $)

G'day 'bloke' & 'Shelia' from the 'geri-Raven' just up-the-hill. Pamela & I will get down & visit you 2 when we are not flooded-in & you are at home. Hay folks, 300 mls in the last 5 days is not conducive to good sailing conditions, even after surviving a Cat 5 Cyclone. Shaun, you & Robin are much better at 'high-tech' than us 'older folks' but like Richard I can see a thousand uses for this - hi-tech camera. Imaging being able to check-out the foil shape of all the sails & do it from top to bottom & in all winds & while sailing. How good would that be? WOW Whether you chose to 'go faster' is not all the value here. Better sail shape ie efficiency would allow many significant gains; less stress thus better sail shape & longer life in a much better condition of the sail fabric, (like add 10 years on to the life of your sails & in better condition); better batten shape/coordination with the sail, (like less wear & tear on the sail - saving many many dollars over time - more cruising funds available for MUCH more 'fun in the sun'); better 'slot' control, between all the sails, thus a more up-right sailing attitude presented to both the hull & the sails, thus less stress, thus more money in the bank & more 'fun in-the sun' & for longer. AND that's just the start; think of being able to check-out the - flow over the keel & skeg/rudder, etc. All that is as above, better, smoother, less cost, longer passages, less effort, more comfort, less repairs, less wear & tear, more cruising funds for more fun in-the-sun for longer. The list is endless. Sure hope you might take the time to bring me up-to-speed with how to use it so I can cash-in on all the fun. WOW. Thanks for letting us all know I'm sure we will all benefit. Hope Bob Pattison reads this as it would sure help them design us better cruising sails & at a better price/value. Thanks again, james - happy sailing everybody
