Hey Yawl,
We've finally escaped Pago Pago and are now loving life aboard in the beautiful Vava'u group of islands in the Kingdom of Tonga. We sailed 335 miles with 15 ~ 20 knots of tradewinds on the beam in 53 delightful hours. And I must say - this is among the Top Five of the finest cruising destinations I've found in three oceans since leaving Hawaii, 15 years ago. Vava'u is simply spectacular! Google it for a peek.
However - my main reason for writing is to inquire if anyone out there knows of an affordable bungalow to rent for a few weeks near the boatyard at Vuda Point, on the west coast of Fiji. I know of two budget-breaking resorts on the beach right by the marina... but I'm looking for something without the manicured lawns, artificial beaches, fine dining and trendy gift shops.
We're planning to do a routine haul-out there in August and I'd prefer to have my wife and son chilling-out and doing home school in a simple bungalow under a coconut tree, rather than sweating in the boat with a saloon littered with tools... while I'm sanding, grinding, painting and cussing at barnacles under our boat in a boatyard blowing toxic dust in the afternoon breeze.
If any of you have any tips or suggestions on an affordable place to stay near Vuda Point, Fiji - I would be very Grateful for sharing.
To Life!
Kirk
