I want to try putting a hammock into a cruiser. Having hooks in four corners and attaching it when you are ready to sleep. I wonder if this would numb the movement of the ship or something? Just a thought. Has anybody tried doing this?

I don't like swinging that much. OK for cloths.

I wouldn't secure it in four places as it won't swing. You obviously need to string it fore and aft.

Hammocks are very comfortable on a large boat but I would think that a small yacht under way would be a bit too much movement.

Only on the foredeck on a mild sunny day - and then only secured on mast and forstay.

IMHO the rocking motion actually adds to the enjoyment of a hammock - and I suspect one secured at four points would be pretty uncomfortable.......

Easiest way to know for sure it is to test one out!!

Cheers

Hm yeah four places might be too stiff but I guess that depends how far apart and how much slack you put in it. On the foredeck.. that sounds most enjoyable. Thanks for the comments! =D

About twenty years ago I sailed in one of the Swedish navy's training ships; a topsail schoner named H.M.S. Falken. A large proportion of the crew slept in hammocks. They were supported at each end by one hook only. I had a berth but the crew insisted that the hammocks were most comfortable once one became used to sleeping in them.

Sailing ships have evolved over hundreds of years and if the "four hook" method was superior to the two hook solution then I am sure seamen would have insisted upon that many years ago.
